Switches mounted in dash

Permanent Linkby Machster69 on Apr 04 2013, 9:23pm

Well, I originally had a thread on a Good spot for hidden switches... , since then I have moved them to a new spot. I now have them mounted on the dash where they are still hidden... just in plain view lol! They are also VERY accessible. The one to the right control the amp research steps I have. The one on the left is for my cargo light mod(to turn on the cargo light without turning on the interior lights)

Diablew Tune BEGINS!

Permanent Linkby Machster69 on Mar 13 2013, 3:08pm

The time has come...
The time when boy becomes a man! The time when silly canned tunes just arent enough anymore...
The time is DIABLEW TUNE TIMEEEEEEE!

Payment was sent this am. Initial data logs will be ran in 2 hours! ITS GO TIME!

And to think I just wanted to disable AFM in the beginning... how childish of me!

AFM/DOD - Does it save fuel?

Permanent Linkby Machster69 on Feb 24 2013, 4:14pm

Today I will be making a 90 one way mile interstate run. I will be making the run with a stock tune, then returning with a modified stock tune to eliminate AFM/DOD. I will be traveling the same roads, same speeds, same fuel etc...

I will be using the DIC. I will not debate the accuracy of the DIC. I will say it seems to be consistent, even if consistently high/low. So for this test, it will work fine using the DIC. I will be resetting the mileage only when on the interstate and up to speed on both trips and comparing. I am not biased, I dont care about mileage! Lets, not debate this... this is a blog simply for testing purposes. I dont care about your opinions, these facts are just that, facts. This means no commenting!

From BR to NO:
AFM/DOD: ON
Cruise controlled Speed: 70-74 mph
Temperature: 60 degrees
A/C: ON
Alternator charging: NO
Terrain: Flat, mild changes in grade not enough to warrant a transmission shift
Traffic: Light
Distance: 87 Miles all interstate(city mileages were removed from the test)
Avg MPG: 20.3
Winds: Tailwind of 7mph NE

From NO to BR:
AFM/DOD: OFF
Cruise controlled Speed: 70-74 mph
Temperature: 64 degrees
A/C: ON
Alternator charging: NO
Terrain: Flat, mild changes in grade not enough to warrant a transmission shift
Traffic: Light/Medium
Distance: 87 Miles all interstate(city mileages were removed from the test)
Avg MPG: 23.7
Winds: Headwind of 7mph NE

Conclusion:
While I could actually care less about mpgs. I am more concerned about the idea of oil consumption issues that plague the 5.3. That said, even if this test found AFM/DOD to have even what I consider massive mpgs gained, I would still remove it! I must say, I am even more shocked at what this trip yielded information-wise. This particular trip with it's particular circumstances yielded far better mpgs with AFM/DOD disabled. So instead of having a system in which AFM/DOD increases mpgs, but causes the possibility of the engine needing what is equivalent to open heart surgery(piston/rings), we have a system that for this particular style of travel has decreased our mpgs significantly all while leaving the possibility for the engine damage. IMO(not asking yours) this is an absolute no brainer that one should immediately disable the v4 activation known as AFM/DOD.

Notes: The only tunes made to the truck were modified stocks. NO octane tunes were used. The only tune modification was a dod delete. 90 miles was found to be far more than enough to prove the mpgs earned. In both cases the final avg mpg was within .2 +/- of the avg mpg found within the first 15 miles of interstate travel. This leads me to believe when referring to round trips, traveling more than 90 miles with the same variables mentioned above will not yield any different numbers as this trip was found to be far in excess of required mileage needed for a steady avg mpg to be found. Will afm cause gains for some? I couldnt imagine how but in my particular truck, its not only useless... it was harmful to both mpgs and the motor! That said, I now have TWO reasons for disabling the system!

My opinion on why AFM/DOD yielded a lower mpg rating: For these two tests, I did not watch the DIC for one second. Ide compare the driving in both runs within 95% of each other. The return trip yielded better mileage even with a headwind. WHY? Well, I have noticed in the past my particular truck does not manage to stay in v4 for any long periods of time. I would say seconds at best! I have noticed with AFM OFF and running data logs, the throttle is very consistent, relatively speaking. So on the low end you would see 21mpg on instant DIC and the high end 26mpg. This yielded a solid average of 23+ mpgs. Inversely, when AFM is active. The truck would go from this average to mpgs in the 35+ range or more, but when reactivating v8 the truck began a game of catchup to get back to the avg. This catchup would routinely show 10-15mpgs as it increased back to 21-26 average. In turn, the throttle data shows wild fluctuations in required fuels. I believe the truck tries to hold onto the v4 mode too long and in turn lugs the truck down in the process!

For those that understand what a constant is you will understand it does not matter if you have this rear end, a transfer case, this motor etc...
As long as your comparing apples to apples)in this case the same truck for both trips) the results are consistent!

ALL this said, WHO CARES ABOUT MPGS!!! DIABLO TUNE TIMEEEEE! NEXT UP, DIABLEW TUNE!
