Hope this technology makes it to the pickup world

Permanent Linkby starspangled6.0 on Mar 26 2011, 4:39pm

I found this article on Motor Trend's website. Holy cow, has Buick ever hit a home run with this technology package: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/alternative/1103_2012_buick_lacrosse_eassist_drive/index.html

I'm hoping that GM can transfer some of this eco-goodness to their truck line. I'm not much of a greenie, but I'm all for saving at the pump. The full-hybrid system isn't really a viable option for most truck owners; plus with the price premium of a Hybrid Silverado\Sierra, it doesn't make financial sense. However, with what GM came up with in the LaCrosse, maybe it would fit in a pickup...

It's an interesting concept. It would be interesting to see what they would do to the drivetrain. They would use a smaller engine initially (maybe the 3.6L Lambda engine), and then supplement power from the batteries. In that scenario, they would have to solve for towing ability, torque curve, etc. Not saying it's impossible (Ford is trying, too, I know), but I doubt if many truck owners would take the chance on it.
Our plan is to keep the big truck for towing and projects, and buy my wife a more efficient vehicle for her next car. That Buick might be just the ticket!

Well, technology keeps improving- hopefully truck makers can keep up with all the new government regulations!
