Changed rear diff fluid

Permanent Linkby starspangled6.0 on Jul 18 2011, 1:34am

What a perfect Sunday afternoon: A Twins' game on the radio (4-3 win, too :D!), and a project to tackle on my truck. In preparation for plowing season (he says when the temp was 90F, with a dew point of 81- a MN record :o ), I want to change out all of my drivetrain fluids. I started with the rear diff today. Not too difficult- I did find a surprise, though, when I unscrewed the fill plug. Whoever filled it before me had put way too much oil in, so fluid poured out when I took the fill plug out (the Hayne's manual says the fluid is supposed to be right below the fill hole, not overflowing). Oh well, now my diff has the proper amount of top-of-the-line synthetic, so I'm happy. Many thanks to EKinMN and Z15 for their advice prior to the project, and again to EKinMN, for letting me borrow his fluid pump (a must for jobs like this).

Do you have a pic of the fluid pump that you used for the rear diff job?

I used Eric's pump on the AMSOIL bottles, and it fit just fine. I didn't buy enough oil from Eric, so I got a bottle of Royal Purple to finish it of; Royal Purple comes in a squeeze bottle, so it doesn't need a pump.

OK, now that I've seen the pic I have seen those before, just never used one. It really would of helped when I was trying to put gear oil in the front axle of the '97 Blazer I used to own (seals leaked a bit) That Blazer had the best engine I think I have ever owned, the ole 4.3L, and the 4X4 worked awsome, problem is the truck was falling apart around the engine ;)

Just a fyi

Here is another type of tool you can use. Often referred to as an extraction pump (for sucking out fluids), it can be used both ways. I keep 2 in the shop, one for each use and I always clean and hang them up so all the fluid drains out (into a container). (both ends unscrew). These really come in handy if you overfill something.

Capacity of this one is 1/2 qt if I recall.

A 1/2 quart at a time would be nice. Your arm gets tired quick when using the little pumps. I bet it takes a 100 pumps to empty a quart of lube.

It's just a really good workout, Eric :D! I think the satisfaction of knowing my diff is full of clean, world-class synthetic oil is worth the effort.
