04 2500HD ABS kicks in every time I brake at slow speed

Postby Blastfurnace [OP] » Apr 18 2012, 2:02am

Hi everyone,
I hope you can help me. I have a 2004 2500HD and every time I brake when I get to a speed under 5mph the ABS kicks in. It's not a lot but I get the ABS pulse everytime. I see people talk about a ABS fuse and Brain and pump but I do not know where these are located.

If anyone has any idea what could be causing this I really would like to know.

One time the ABS light came on and another time the "Service Brake System" message came up.

Any thoughts?

thanks!
Mark

I have almost the same issue on my sierra and am waiting on a response from some members. I was told to pull the front sensors and check for corrosion and clean them. It involves taking the front brakes apart to do it.
That may be your problem and GM has had several TSBs on this issue.

Have the system checked with a diagnostic scanner to see what the codes are. That should narrow down your diagnosis process. Usually the "code readers" can not check the codes of the ABS system, so you will have to find someone with a "diagnostic scanner".

I had a GM dually 4x4 that did the exact same thing. I had to replace the 4x4 hubs on the front axle. Solved it. Maybe check into that.

I had an 01 that did that. I had to have the ABS sensors replaced as they did have a corosion problem. A year after i did that i got a recall notice from GM on the issue. I sent them a copy of the bill i paid from my dealer and they mailed me a check.

Ok,
I will start with checking the sensors. Couple of questions.... Am I just looking at the fronts? If i am correct there are no sensors on the rear wheels. Is that correct?

I'm sure when I put it on the lift and take off the rotors I will see the wires to the sensors. It's been awhile since I have paid attention to this area but if I remember I think that there are 'notches' that spin under the sensor. Is that also correct?
I know on my Grand Am the ABS is built into the wheel bearing but this isn't the case on the Silverado if i remember right there is a screw/bolt that allows the sensor to come free but that may be on older truck.

Thanks to everyone of you for your input. I have a trip to new york city coming up and want this resolved before I head out.

Your correct about the bolt holding it in. If I remember right, the dealer takes the sensor out, sprays it with brake cleaner, cleans the place where it mounts to the hub ass'y then re-install

Just had this exact problem fixed on my '03. If you have access to a scanner you will likely find "irratic" messages being sent to your one or both of your two front sensor. It is rust corrosion build up. You can clean the sensor, but chances are good that you will end up breaking them off trying to get them out. I replaced both of my front sensors and the problem has been corrected. There was no recall for them up here in Canada so I did not have that option.

GM did have a recall for this in canada. I remember having to take my dads truck in to get it done. It was the same time as the tailgate cable recall, they did both at the same time. Its been a while though......

Everyone mentions recalls and I have had this truck since 08 but I have never received a recall on this. i did receive a notice about the dash gauges but mine didn't go bad until I was out of mileage range.
So I assume an 04 with 94000 miles isn't eligible.
(Talked to Chevy about the gauges but they wanted me to go out of pocket at the dealer and then "depending on what the dealer finds we will decide what to do". I talked to the dealer and they said they would change the oil pressure sensor first because "it's the cheapest way to start cause it's only like 50 bucks plus labor" My local dealer may have the worst service department in the fleet.)
