ABS and Brake lights

Postby Jkerr40 [OP] » Jul 08 2012, 6:54am

I have a 2001 Silverado 1500 5.3 4x4. My ABS light and Brake light keep turning on together when I start my truck and I'm not sure what it is trying to tell me. Can anyone help me out?

Have the codes read to see what codes are present. Most auto parts stores should be able to read them.

X2 on getting the codes read. Chances are it will be a front wheel speed sensor code. Wheel speed sensors are built into the hub bearing assembly, you probably be replacing a hub assembly to fix it.

Proper diagnosis, even paying for diagnosis at a shop is 9 times out of 10 cheaper than throwing a bunch of parts at a vehicle guessing if its not a easy fix. Tech 2 scanner will show wheel speed for each wheel and read abs codes. It could be a solenoid in the abs block, wiring, hub assemblies, voltage supply problem, low on brake fluid, brake fluid level sensor, and on and on and on. Need more info and codes listed

Mine is doing that now, but its the wheel sensors, and the light stays on because I pulled the abs fuse, because I drove like that for a while and as I slowed down the abs would kick in and not let me stop. Hope this helps

I also have a 2001 1500 with both abs and brake lights coming on after 1/4 mile or so driving. Took it in to GM dealer for diagnosis. ABS module is bad, $1481 to replace with new one, 1 yr parts and labor. Was told by service writer that there is an option. They (GM) could remove module and send it off to be rebuilt, about $500 less, 5 yr parts- no labor, truck would be inoperable for about a week. Seeing as I have not noticed any other issues ie- abs engaging sporadically, and I've been driving it with the lights on for over a month, that's a repair on the "things I'd like to have done" list.
