ABS and Break indicator lights come on.

ABS and break indicator light are intermittent

Postby RF_Guy [OP] » Jan 28 2012, 6:24pm

hello i am having another problem with my 2000 Chevy Silverado. While i am driving down the road sometimes my ABS and Breake indicator lights come on. It is random when it happens, some times they come on during a drive and sometimes they don't. When the lights come on, I can turn the key off and start the truck again and they will go away.

Any ideas or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

Have someone check for codes with a diagnostic scanner. It could be anything. If it has codes, that should narrow down the problem.

My truck is doing the same this. 04 Silverado 1500. It's gotten worse though, now all my gauges drop off except for the speedo and tach and that damned annoying chime goes off too. The advice that I have received points to the instrument cluster. I found a guy on ebay who will send you a refurb'd one in exchange for your broken cluster and $130. I haven't had the time to do it yet but I think I'm going to give it a shot after my next kid is born next month. If you figure it out sooner please let me know what you find out. Good Luck.

Thanks again ASTE25!
OK so I had the OBD read. Mine doesn't do break codes.. grrr! So here is a list of what they are if anyone can tell me what they mean I would be greatfull. I cant seem to find them anywhere in cyberspace.

B0242
B0246
B0251

Kenpark04, it almost sounds like your cluster is going bad or the connector to the cluster may be loose. that may be a good start? Do your indicator lights come on on the cluster? You may just want to take a quick peak at it and pay attention to the electrical traces on the circuit board. Also you may want to try cleaning the connections for your other gauges before purchasing another cluster.

for each gauge there were 3 to 4 pins that you may want to make sure they are making good contact. Good luck!

I would assume you mean they all start with "P". I have never seen them start witha "B".

They codes actually started with a "B" that were read from my computer... could be a syntax issue in my buddy's OBD II code reader? This could explain why i cant find anything on those codes...hmmmmm? Ill have to come back to this one when i get more info...

I'd take it and have someone with an actual diagnostic scanner, not a code reader, check it and see what it says.

ABS and break indicator light are intermittent

Postby Joeking » Jan 31 2012, 2:34am

Codes that start with B exist too. The P codes are for powertrain related issues, B is for body related issues. Then there's C & U. C being for chassis and U for network or computer communications issue.

Re: ABS and break indicator light are intermittent

yes, i discovered the "U" Code today. After reading up on some troubleshooting tips on my abs+brake light issue. I stumbled on a thread about a grounding issue and it causing the lights to come on. The thread was talking about the lights coming due to a bad ground for the EBCM. When i disconnected it to clean up the contacts the OBD threw me a "u" code.

Unfortunately this didn't fix my problem. when i disconnected the ground for the EBCM it only turned on the ABS light and not the break light. I did however get those dirty contacts cleaned up.

So if anyone knows of a fix or has a direction they can point me in... i will ever be searching the internet for my answers.
