ABS Light

ABS Light

Postby amberlynn [OP] » Mar 27 2011, 12:08am

I've had an ABS light on for a while. Right before I purchased my truck in October, they replaced the right front wheel bearing and ABS sensor. About two months ago I had to slam on the breaks during a snow storm, I felt the ABS kick in, and I've had a light on ever since. I'm not a big fan of ABS anyway, but need to fix it. Any ideas on how to find out which sensor it is? I don't own any type of computer. Or will I have to go somewhere and pay for diagnostics to do it myself? Any ideas or tricks would be helpful.

I believe most auto parts stores will scan your computer for free... that's a start.
Are there any brake issues you're experiencing?

The brakes work fine. The only other problem is the parking brake flashes.

The auto parts stores near me only scan for emissions codes. None had the brake scan tool available to check my car when my light was on. The had them on the shelf for sale but none open to use. hopefully your stores can help. Most shops charge $100.00 just to diagnose it, at that cost you can buy a scan tool and do it yourself. When I was searching them, Amazon had the best prices on them. And usually all that actually fails is the wiring to the sensor. The wires get brittle over time and the suspension bouncing around doesn't help. It may be possible for you to just buy the wire it's self, but then again, you may have to buy the whole hub assembly.

When this happened to my car and the ABS light was on the ABS would not work, BUT when the ABS light would flash when I was driving LOOK OUT! because it would engage when trying to stop! and that was scary! because it would take longer to stop and if you are not prepared for it you can run right into someone. You may want to disconnect one of the sensors at one of your wheels to completely disengage the system so it does not engage on you when you least expect it.

Hmm...my brakes have yet to fail thank goodness but have been careful. My autozones and advanced auto don't have scan tool for brakes. But I'm gonna call a ma and pa parts store I worked at in high school. That will be my last hope. Then maybe I'll look at buying one on amazon. With 5 chevys in the driveway and 2 with abs lights on it may be a good investment. Anyone have any advice on a brand?

I got a $40 scanner off of Amazon... I forgot the brand. It's cheap crap, but it works for what I need it to do. I'm guessing you'll be safe with most any scanner... or, you can use this opportunity as an excuse to get a programmer! :) The programmer will not only dump some extra HP into the engine, it will also scan and clear the codes.

Programmers and emsissions code readers will not read ABS issues, you have to get a scan tool that is for ABS. I think the cheap ones run around $100 or you can spend more and get better unit. I am looking at the Actron CP9850 on Amazon they go for $150.00

i had my abs come on when i was driving through montana. it would come on them off consistently for a while, then just stayed on. i put 35 inch toyos mt tires on and i guess i rubbed through the abs harness. my bearings were shot on the passenger side. oreillys had the bearings hub and abs kit for 125 each. bought 2 of them and rewired the abs harness and no problems.
