Looking for opinions on which would be cheaper/less of a hassle/etc on my 2007 (NBS) Silverado, a drum to disc conversion for the rear or finding a GM axle with disc brakes already installed. Pros, cons and any experiences anyone has with this particular adventure would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
^^^ The OP probably wants to do the conversion because disc brakes are better. Drum brakes are old tech and I dont understand why GM went back to drum brakes on the nnbs trucks. Both of my 04 Silverados had disc brakes all the way around. I myself prefer disc brakes.
To the OP I am not sure which way would be best way to go cost wise.
I think GM dropped the rear disks due to the calipers seizing up a lot. I remember my mechanic telling me about this. They went back to the old style drums because they were time tested and reliable. I think the only benefit to rear disc brakes are that they look fancier behind big rims.
^^^ I have had more problems with drum brakes than I ever did with disc brakes.
Other truck makers have had disc brakes all the way around for years without switching back to drums, they have not had any problems with them.
I remember a few years back reading about a study GM did between disc and drum brakes. Two identical trucks except one with drums and one with discs. In braking tests, the disc brake truck ended up with a shorter stopping distance but it wasn't a big difference.
The OP may find the swap to be easy. But finding the correct proportioning valve to make the rears work in harmony with the fronts may be a challenge.
