Hello, I removed the rear wheels on my truck just to inspect the condition of the rear brake pads and was surprised that it looks like maybe 25% lining remaining on the pads. My truck has the original 26,300 miles from an older one owner man. He never used the truck for any real work (hauling or towing). I usually always get well over 80k (got 175k on my T-Bird) on the rear pads on all the other vehicles I have owned. Is this kind of wear normal? BTW, the front pads are factory original too and look like they have approx 50% lining left.
If you do a lot of city driving you're going to get a lot less mileage out of your brakes as you're doing a lot of stop and go. More freeway means less braking and more miles out of your brakes.
Excessive rear wear says to me that either a proportioning valve problem or a lot of light braking. When you apply the brakes the rears engage first, then the front. It's hard to guess how the previous owner drove so if everything seems normal, I'd just drive normal, change the brakes when you need and see how the new pads wear.
You never know, the old guy may have driven around town with his left foot on the brake pedal. Also, rear pads (new) usually have less friction material than the fronts.
These brakes are pretty strange anyways. Drive 100miles a day to and from work, 98% all interstate & when I reach my destination, both back rotors are so hot I cannot touch them and the fronts are cool to the touch. I have already took the rears apart, put new hardware in, greased the sliders & made sure the "parking" brake is not dragging. Guess I will remove the inner splash guards that keep the rotors clean & dry (and hot) next.
Driving w/ the parking brake on would be real annoying as the light is flashing like crazy &the chime dinging. I rode w/ a buddy in his 2001 and he forgot re release the brake, it took about 10 seconds and the "alerts" went off.
I don't know what year your truck is but I had something similar with mine. I have a 2010 ccsb and when I had the oil changed the mechanic told me o was going to need new rear brakes soon, so I went back to the dealer to have them check the brakes and the service mgr told me they we almost brand new. It seems that gm redesigned the rear pads from a denser, lighter material. That was 30,000 miles ago and I haven't had a problem. As far as your heat issue i don't have a clue. Hope I helped.

I'd leave the splash guards on. I'd go with the proportioning valve next, hopefully we're not dealing with an abs issue. That's never cheap. The splash guards don't hold that much heat in. Something's making your rear brakes drag.
From your original post it looks like you have rear disk, right? Rear disk uses an inside the rotor drum style parking brake. Could that be dragging, causing the heat problem?
