Looking for some info on new Brakes

Postby Mirarchi87 [OP] » Jul 11 2012, 9:37pm

Hey guys,

I just hit the 50k mile mark in my 2005 Chevy 1500. My brakes have been pulsing when I stop for about 300 or so miles now, I'm assuming due to uneven wear on the pads. I'm thinking that I should just replace all 4 and start wearing evenly. A few questions I have:

-Is the pulsing because of uneven wear or because of maybe a jacked up rotor?
-Do you recommend doing all 4 or just the necessary ones?
-Will I need to get my rotors turned down?
-Any brand/models that you would recommend? (I do mainly highway driving)
-Any tips to for a DIY install. I saw another post saying change the brake fluid - is that just a preventive thing or is there a more significant purpose?

Thank for any help you can offer!

Im assuming you have rear discs. With that said ide only check those to see if they are worn enough to warrant service. They tend to wear slower than the fronts. I do not recommend turning any rotors, if the rotor is grooved or thin beyond spec i recommend replacing with a oem part. I wouldnt get cheap rotors. As far as the fluid goes, it depends how dirty it is, some change it every 30k... Im interested in this "pulsing" this feel is normally associated with abs. Have you inspected the brakes yet? I just did a 2nd inspection on my other truck @66k and they are still good to go. There is also a detailed how to for the brake service and fluid changes in the how to section...

I'm pretty sure you have ceramic pads on that truck. They should last a while. And +1 on the back brakes wearing slower than the fronts. I've heard of people getting 200,000 miles on the rear brakes.

The pulsing your feeling is most likly warped rotors. If this is the first time the brakes are going to be replaced there is no problem with turning the rotors long as you dont get them to thin. There are flat spots on the edge of the rotor that indicates when the rotor is to thin

I would reccomend replacing the front rotors and pads. Surfacing the rotors removes metal from them and allows them to re-warp easier. The rear shoes will likely look new. I would pull the drums just to make sure. You can clean the dust off and readjust them and they should be good to go.
