Hello, my dad has a 2009 chevy 1500 crew cab short bed. We just noticed a big brake issue. There are groves in the rotors. Big grooves. Im not sure if something got in there and did it but its on both sides of the rotor. It on the drivers side front. Heres some pics. I looked around online and found some rotors. It seems like they are about 70-90 dollars a piece. If someone coukd point me in the right direction with some links that'd be great. We also need brake pads. He said he might want to go with drilled and slotted rotors too so those aren't out of the question. Thanks for any help.
Something could have gotten in there, being that its a 09 i dought your calipers are rusted. When my rotors looked like that my caliper slide pins had rusted causing the brake pad to not fully depress, try taking apart your calipers and making sure there fully lubed.
70-90$ for rotors seem pretty high i paid 25 a peice for mine from a local auto parts store. I no autozone and advanced do not offer this service but we have a local parts store that will churn the rotors as long as there is enough thickness for them to play with. I believe it was $5 a rotor, Mine were to thin so i had to purchase new ones
If your pads were low that would cause that scrape, I just re read your post and noticed you said they had gouges on both sides so i dought a rock or something did that
The pads are only a year old (or less) and there is still most of them left. The calipers look good. Im going to pull the calipers this weekend and will take a deeper look. That's relivingto know they mat not be as expensive as I saw.
Not at all, trust me call some auto shops someone will churn the rotors, it will be your cheapest bet those rotors still look new. As for taking it apart make sure you get some caliper grease and coat that on the 2 metal slides that the brake pads sit on, and there should be 2 pins on the caliper housing that you should greese up. I dont know much about brakes but everytime ive dealt with this issue i churn rotors, replace pads and grease the hell out off it. Its worked everytime
and as for the slotted and drilled rotors, I wouldnt go with them unless your dad does alot of heavy towing or he loves slamming on the brakes. Its a waste of money imo if you dont tow, but hey what do i know.
I think the rotors are shot. Those gouges are like 1/8" deep. Cutting them would put thrm well past the minimum thickness. And inspection is up in may and pa checks that.
Those grooves are not uncommon. My 2005 had them like that too. Honestly, if it were my truck and they were not vibrating, I throw a set of pads on it and call it a day. If they were vibrating then I would replace, rather than have surfaced, the rotors.
I would much raher do that too, but... Pennsylvania state inspection says there cant be any grooves in the rotors deeper than however deep (can remember the number off the top of my head. So it will fail inspection. The inspection is out next month so not much time to play with.
Boy everyone talking about these inspections all the time makes me thankful that i live in michigan ( Might be the only good thing besides the Lions *If you live here you know thats a joke* lol)
Thanks from both of us again guys. We bought a set of rotors and ceramic pads today. $179 out the door for everything. Picked up some caliper grease too.
That seams a bit rough, what brand did you go with? I just did my front pads w/ AutoZone gold ceramics for$40 but I did have a limited amount of money to spend, otherwise i would of went with higher end pads.
I went with raybestos. But I think we have another problem. We put them on and they stop good and all but they get really hot and were smoking a little bit. The heat looked evident on the brand new shiny rotors but they were hot. I couldn't even touch them. I think the smoke was from tje little bit of oil and brake clean but not sure. We are a little worried about this so any help is greatly appreciated
New pads will smoke and stink for a little while. I always take a vehicle out and make a couple of "panic" stops with it after I do a brake job to seat the pads in. They will smoke a bit and stink like a burned clutch. After the initial seating in they shouldn't smoke or stink unless really heated up.
Thats what I figured. Also, I took the temp of the brakes. The rotprs were 240* the calipers were 130* is that bad. They arr ceramic pads so I dont know if that matters.
It should be fine, I woulnt worry about it too much after a week of driveing and they are still smoking than I would worry but it should be fine. Temps are normal, thats why its important that break fluid is changed due to breaking temps being over waters boiling point!
This is caused when the retainer tabs on the caliper hardware are not in the correct location. The tabs are betwen the pad and rotor. They need to be repositioned.
