How to fix squeak in rear drums

UPDATED w/pics - Rear brake drum squeak!

Postby 6Sixathome [OP] » Jul 11 2012, 9:56pm

My drums and brakes have less than 5K on them and the squeak and grab like they are warped. The set that was on there before did the same thing. Is it dust between the pad and drum making it do this or? I should also mention this only happens when the brakes are good and warmed up like stop and go driving.

I had the same problem. Pull the drums and use a brush to remove any brake dust. Once I did that, they were fine again.

Sure will. BTW do you like the wheels on your truck?, I've been tossing the idea around of some summer wheels (20") and I really like that style. Do you think they would look good with an AT tire?

I took the tires and drums off today and sure enough they had lots of dust on the shoes and a lot of dust on the drums. I cleaned everything up good with brake parts cleaner, scuffed up the shoes with sandpaper and put it all back together. Squeak is gone 8-)

Re: Rear brake drum squeak!

Due to my recent shoulder surgery, I brought my truck to a local tire and brake shop here. I had the same problem with my truck (35k on the ticker) and now the rear drum squeak is gone, problem was the accumulated dust and dirt in the drum. However, now my brand new pads and rotors are squeaking on my front left at about 1/8 of pedal pressure.....I just can't win.

I hate squeaking brakes too. I ended up with ceramic pads and fresh anti squeak to put on the back of the pads. It's been a year and so far so good.
