Rear brakes and drums replaced on 2010

Rear brakes and drums replaced on 2010

Postby Webconn [OP] » May 16 2011, 8:04pm

I have a 2010 Silverado with 32,000 miles on it.. Last week the rear brakes started grinding within a weeks time. I took it to the dealer and they said rear brake pads were down to nothing. They said it needed "special pads" and only AC Delco sold them.....they had to order them from Canada. It took a week to get them in and now there saying I need a new drum. Went from $158.00 to $260.00. Still not done yet. My question is should the rear brakes be bad already...and do they really need a speical pad? Dealer said it is odd they're already shot, but said Chevrolet will not do anything about it. I can't ever remember replacing back pads and drums before front pads on any car I have owned!

The dealer sounds like he is following some service bulletin. Ask for a copy.

Drums usually average 100k + with normal driving habits. I can't believe yours are shot at 32k. Are you still under factory warranty? If so,have you called the GM Customer Service line?

Chevrolet is going to have District rep contact me tomorrow about brake drums. She said that is not considered normal wear...maybe they will pay for them. I told her I was not happy about replacing rearpads also....fronts I could see...but not back! The drama continues till tomorrow.........

Ok...well got truck back yesterday...$277.00 for 1 new drum and pads. They said that they believe the emergency brake cable got stuck at the brake housing and caused the brakes to stay slightly engaged. I told them that should not have happened and that Chevrolet needs to pay for this. This is a new truck!! Sounds like a design flaw to me. I had no brake light on and he said it was in the back where the cable splits into 2 cables. Said maybe during the winter it froze up and stayed stuck. I think I'll spray some motorkote on it!

glad you have a resolution, but I agree at 32,000 miles they should be paying for it. Isn't a 3 year 36,000 warrenty?

did they machine the other drum? i am NOT a fan of only doing one side. living in washington you see people wreck on wet roads after faulty brake jobs . brakes are meant to be done in pairs please hassle them about this and make sure your safe. this sounds "screwy" to me. i dont want to hear we "believe" the were slightly engaged. that makes it sounds like the tech is throwing parts at the thing hoping it'll fix itself. well theres my rant hope you get things worked out.

If you are not satisfied with the dealer, go to another, or escalate the issue to a district GM rep. This should be a covered repair in my opinion...
