FYI and comment (anyone else out there having this issue?)
To my knowledge this issue is very new. I've been told that 2 police cruisers have been repaired under warranty (the 36K bumper to bumper) and 1 person has had their personal truck repaired.
Requires
-Vacuum pump (bolted to the driver side front of engine with pulley attached)
-Vacuum line between the booster and the pump
-Brake booster
-Master cylinder
-Vacuum pump belt
2014 Silverado 1500 4x4 Z71
89,000 miles
All maintenance (preventative or otherwise) performed at the same Chevrolet dealership
Background of vehicle use: 89,000 miles with 9/32 tread depth remaining on original tires. Brake pad surfaces still in "green" status by Chevrolet service department. This shows how much braking the vehicle experiences… very little compared to many other similar 2014 Silverados.
Issue first noticed May 2016 (roughly 59,000 miles on vehicle at that time)
Noticed failure of vehicle to stop. Lack of power assist braking at slow speeds. Brake pedal is rock hard with little to zero travel (1/4" at most). Vehicle will continue to move (regardless of pressure applied to brake pedal) for several feet. While this has occurred in both forward and reverse gears; the issue is consistently observed in reverse. Issue much more prevalent following owner's highway commute of 70 miles (every morning upon arrival to work backing or pulling into parking spot and every evening when backing down driveway). Issue is always observed when towing a trailer and backing up.
Service with regards to this issue thus far - January 2017: Replaced brake booster vacuum sensor/pipe (part number 23135228) "switch with pipe" was also noted on the service order. Approximately $200 charged to customer with zero beneficial results pertaining to the problem.
Chevrolet service department has repaired this same issue on 3 vehicles thus far. Two of which were at 27,000 miles and the other at 91,000 miles. Rumored to be roughly $1900 repair.
