Squishy brakes?

Squishy brakes?

Postby 04clem [OP] » Jun 21 2012, 6:41am

Ever since I got my truck it's had squishy brakes. If you slammed on the brakes doin about 55 it would very slowly stop. So I took it to the brake shop and they replaced the rear brakes, which made it a little better but they were still squishy, so I asked them and they said that's how it's supposed to be.that doesn't sound right to me what do you guys think?

My 2004 didn't have the best feeling brakes, but I would not go so far as to say they were squishy feeling. I would bleed them to make sure there was no air in the lines.

I would check the fluid and bleed if you feel the need, everyones definiton of "squishy" also I take it the front brakes were good since they just replaced the rear brakes only?

Perform a complete brake fluid flush, and I'll bet your brake pedal will firm up. The fluid may be "worn out" and/or there's some air in the system. Brake fluid is an oft ignored fluid to maintain.

My father's '04 with 4 wheel disc feels very spungy and takes a while to stop compared to my '06 with discs/drums.

His has been like that since new - It's a weird feeling hopping back and forth between trucks.
