Extremely Loud Fan /Radiator

Extremely Loud Fan /Radiator

Postby AuburnSierra [OP] » May 31 2011, 6:08am

Well, Alabama is now getting a constant 90 degree weather and with that I've started noticing a VERY loud noise around the radiator area (I know nothing about radiator/ac fans). My truck is an '09 1500 (5.3) and the noise seems to be happening more often when I use the remote start. It does eventually go away, maybe 5 minutes after starting the truck and turning the key. I'm only guessing this has started b/c the tempature has started rising and the sensor is trying to cool the truck down immediately. Is this a common issues with the new body style? Should I be worried about this issue? If so, can anyone tell me what the issue is?

I am interested in any responses too. This happens to me when it is warm out (generally over 90 degrees or so). Mine is just as loud. I live in an apartment complex that has almost a blind driveway and it makes it really tough to listen for cars coming up the road with this on.

I've asked around a few other places and basically been told to stop whining. Guy told me to just be happy that it works and they are just running on high b/c of the sensors. I just didn't know if this was louder than most. I'll probably still let the dealership look at and let you know Nyron.

Yes. No. Your truck is trying to keep itself cool.

Thanks for the response. I was just worried it was running too high. I can remote start and hear the truck running from the back of my house.

It's an 09' so there is no clutch fan. They're electric fans and it's completely normal. Your trucks hot (hot weather) from sitting in the sun so as soon as you start it the fans kick on full speed. Also, if you have the interior set to cold then the fans will kick on trying to cool the interior immediately. It's completely normal, the electric fans on these trucks are loud.

From the owners manual section 5:

Engine Fan Noise
If the vehicle has a clutched engine cooling fan, when the
clutch is engaged, the fan spins faster to provide more air
to cool the engine. In most everyday driving conditions,
the fan is spinning slower and the clutch is not fully
engaged. This improves fuel economy and reduces fan
noise. Under heavy vehicle loading, trailer towing, and/or
high outside temperatures, the fan speed increases as
the clutch more fully engages, so you may hear an
increase in fan noise. This is normal and should not be
mistaken as the transmission slipping or making extra
shifts. It is merely the cooling system functioning properly.
The fan will slow down when additional cooling is not
required and the clutch disengages.
You may also hear this fan noise when you start the
engine. It will go away as the fan clutch partially
disengages.
If the vehicle has electric cooling fans, you may hear the
fans spinning at low speed during most everyday driving.
The fans may turn off if no cooling is required. Under
heavy vehicle loading, trailer towing, and/or high outside
temperatures, or if you are operating the air conditioning
system, the fans may change to high speed and you
may hear an increase in fan noise. This is normal and
indicates that the cooling system is functioning properly.
The fans will change to low speed when additional
cooling is no longer required.
