Gurgling noise from dash

Gurgling noise from dash

Postby mdmitchell2 [OP] » Feb 13 2013, 12:53am

Hi,

I have a 2001 5.3, 2wd, short bed, single cab silverado with around 126000 miles on it.

Recently, it has developed a noise from under the passenger dashboard that literally sounds like gurgling water, or water pouring into something and it only happens during acceleration. I have also for the last month been having my low coolant light come on but when I check it, its never that low. In fact, if I shut the truck off with the low coolant light on, it never comes back on... I put more coolant in it regardless.

So today i noticed it only makes the noise when my heater is turned OFF. When the heater is on, I do not notice the noise. Ive been advised its probably related to the heater core. I have checked my carpet in my floor board to make sure its not wet, and its never been wet. My heater also seems to work fine ALTHOUGH occasionally I CANT shut the heat off until i shut the truck off, no matter where i turn the dials.

Any advice on the subject would be appreciated. I dont want to go replacing parts until I have a better idea of whats going on...

Thanks,
Matt

Sounds like you have air pockets in the cooling system. I would top the cooling system off and have it pressure checked for leaks.

I had the same issue with my 08, but adding coolant resolved it for me. ASTE25 makes a good point too.

Heater core may just be clogged. I would flush the system really good and see what that does.

Gurgling noise from dash

Postby Machster69 » Feb 13 2013, 3:15pm

You apparently have a coolant leak, causing air in the system. Its a closed system... so it doesnt just disappear. Also sounds as if your heat staying on is a different problem typical of control unit or resistor...

My 2000 did the same thing. The heater core is the high-point in the coolant system, so any air that gets in accumulates there.

To get it out, you can elevate the front end and run the truck for 15 or 20 minutes with the coolant tank cap off. Top off and watch for leaks.

As a side note, do not add green coolant if you have red in there now.

I know this is an old thread but I figured I'd post here rather than start a new one for the exact same issue.

My '99 recently started doing the exact same thing as the op stated. Complete with not being able to turn the heat off without turning the truck off.

Only difference is with mine, instead if sounding like pouring water, it sounds exactly like the sound you would hear if a tire had a leak and you put water on it to isolate the leak. Only happens upon acceleration as well.

Just wondering if this issue was ever resolved.

My Olds Bravada makes that sound but only upon rapid acceleration. It never leaks & has never been low on coolant & the only problem i have ever had with it is the heater quits putting out heat due to the core getting plugged. I then have to flush it out. Once the flush is done, the heater works great again. this has happened 3 times to me. I'm not sure what the cause of the noise is, but I would assume it is probably the heater core since that is about where the noise is coming from. I have never heard this noise from my silverado tho.

My 03 just started the same thing this morning. Gurgling from front passenger side upon slight acceleration from idle. Checked level in the bottle and it is fine. Anyone figure this one out?

My 08 sierra had that sound too. A short time after first hearing it, I stated noticing puddles of coolant under engine. I went and had it pressure tested and it showed that my water pump gasket was leaking. The gurgling was caused by air entering through the leaky gasket. After I replaced gasket and water pump the sound went away. Next time you take a drive and get out, take a whiff and see if you smell any coolant. Even with the puddles, my low coolant light never came on.
