08 doesnt feel as strong as it should.

Postby StealthBoogie [OP] » Jun 18 2012, 4:39pm

I go back and fourth between drving my 04 2500 and 08 2500 and im not sure what the differnece is but... my 04 feels lighter faster and just feels stronger than my 08. When towing my horse trailer, 9k lbs they both work pretty much the same. Even unloaded going up hills in my 08 seems like a slight challenge, i feel as though it shouldnt be at all being such a powerhouse. Is something maybey wrong? Do I need a good tune up of the 08, it has 55k miles, 04 has 250k. All in all, my 08 doesn't struggle but just seems like I should have felt a big difference in power between my 04 and 08.

Do they have the same gear ratio's? I'd think the newer truck would be a little heavier than the older on.

I think you just need a tune. The newer trucks are tuned in a way that they feel sluggish compared to their older counterparts IMO. I've driven 4.3's and 5.3's and noticed that the older trucks seemed to take off quicker. They also did real burnouts compared to the TC and other bullcrap that keeps the power limited on the newer trucks.

I read about the gear ratio's in another post and ill check them later on. The newer truck is heaveier for sure. its a crew cab vs ext cab in the 04

Yea it definatley feels sluggish, even my wife notices it. By a tune you mean one the those program tuners or just a quick shop tune to adjust air/fuel ratio?

I mean a programmer. Not sure what's best out there, but I'm sure a handheld tuner would make a world of difference.

You can get programmers that add 100+ HP for about $400. You can contact one of our sponsors (member/06MonteSS/), and he can set you up with a deal on one. EFI live is better, but more pricey. It's when you take your truck to a dyno, and they tune your truck as it runs on the dyno.

back when the 04 was made....the eco friendly jackasses in california hadnt taken over the state quiet yet so diesels could blow black smoke and have as much power as they want with no restrictions. with these newer trucks and all the california state bullshit eco friendly shit...diesels were hit the worst. the new diesels are GREAT trucks and have so much power its ridiculous. they will tow anything you throw at em, but thats about it. daily driving a newerish diesel is a struggle if its stock. they have so many restrictions and emmisions they have to pass its ridiculous.

my cousin has an 03 dodge dually 5.9 cummins with 388k on the clock. he just bought a 2012 dodge dually with the 6.7L. the plan was to retire the 03 dually to the ranch and it become a ranch truck. after 10k on the 2012....he still pulls his horse trailer and everything with his 03 (and daily drives it) and the 2012 is his wifes now...to take the kids to school and the grocery store (no joke)

hes gonna buy an EGR delete kit and some other stuff to try and elminate all the restrictions and get a programmer with usual mods. really thats all you can do to these new diesels. california screwed it up for the rest of us.

For Us Diesel Guys, join DuramaxForum!! ( still love SS though) I learned a butt ton on why my LMM felt like poop. It sure is the Emission stuff, I plan on deleting the DPF and the EGR. And now that i know what EFI live is, I will be getting it. It is pretty much the best darn tuner out there and is beyond epic. Plus if you delete the emmison stuff its a requirement to have so you can stop your trucck fro mthrowing codes.
