Six hours for a water pump? Seriously?

Six hours for a water pump? Seriously?

Postby BigSchaff570 [OP] » Feb 18 2012, 10:22pm

Hey y'all, this is my first post!!!

The water pump when out in my mother's '01 Chevy Duramax. I took a look under the hood and it doesn't seem too terrible-awful to get to. I looked it up on AllData and it tells me it's a six hour job. The step-by-step has me removing a fender well all other kinda doodads, but to me it looks like some hoses, the radiator shroud and a few other minor obstacles are in the way and that's it. There's no way in hell this is a six hour ordeal!

My question is: has anyone done this before and is there anything specific I need to know?

How to Change the Water Pump on a Chevy Silverado

Is it any different than what this says? I know this is for a gas V8, but I doubt it's much different on a Duramax.

Six hours for a water pump? Seriously?

Postby wheeler82 » Feb 18 2012, 11:02pm

It's deffentlly a tad different, it's gear driven I know that, if I recall when I was on the duramax forum they had a how to over there, I don't wanna point you away from this site nor do I want anyone to get mad at me for doing so I just know someone had a write up over there when I had my diesel. I'm pretty sure to access some bolts you need to remove the harmonic balancer, it's time consuming but I don't think it's 6 hours, hope this is helpful

Thanks, koolz. To me, it looks like it's right there and would be an in-and-out job. But when I read the book rate, I knew something was up.

Makes me miss the days when it took longer to drain the coolant than it did to R&I a water pump.

Its a alot easier when its on the line, but i know that you need to take the water pipe off I believe you have to take the dampner (SP?) the big black pully the crank is attached to off if i remember right because theres a bolt hidden behind there.and then theres a black tube on top that you have to unbolt..with everything attached and in the truck its probobly gonna be a pain in the butt..i worked final assembly so we did most the repairs but its been 3 years since ive done that...but it brings back memories :)

found this..i was right lol
