Braking activates right turn signal as well as brake lights

04 Silverado 2500 Brake light-Signal light problem

Postby silverstreak202 [OP] » May 26 2012, 8:42pm

I have a 2004 Silverado 2500 with 96,000 miles. When I apply the brake most of the time the right turn signal bulbs also light up. I have checked all of the bulbs. To make the right turn signal blink if the brake is already on I may have to move the lever back to neutral and then to the turn position. Is this a turn signal switch problem?

The multifunction switches do malfunction after a while, that could be the problem. Is this a 'new to you' truck? Is there a possibilty that a new trailer light package has been added? If so, there is a possibility of the plug may have been cross-wired or is shorting out on a wire. On some of those plugs, all the wires may not be used thus leaving a bare wire to cross over another wire. I'd crawl under the truck first and make sure you don't have any cross wires.

I ordered the truck new from the factory with the towing package factory installed. I have looked for any bare wires without success. I only recently discovered the problem by seeing the turn signal arrow in the mirror light up when I put on the brakes. How difficult is it to gets to the turn signal switch with the airbag, etc. to be reckoned with? I have done a lot of work on my vehicles, but try to recognize my limitations so as not to mess things up. I am fearful that I have one of those unfindable shorts.

I now have it fixed. It turned out to be the Lighting Control Module which is also called the flasher, but is not the 2 or 3 prong flasher of old. I think it has 10 or 12 prongs and plugs in under the dash. It seems that almost everything goes through that module. If you are having some strange brake light, turn signal, or tail light problems and the bulbs and fuses check out then start with the flasher. My multifunction switch was OK.

I am currently having the exact same issue with my 04 Silverado. Can you tell me what the "Lighting control module" is called and where to buy one? Also, is it easy to install yourself or did you need a mechanic to replace it?
