08 Silverado Airbag Light

08 Silverado Airbag Light

Postby travis_1500 [OP] » Feb 15 2013, 11:54pm

I need a little help with my truck. I have had an airbag light for weeks now and have no idea how to read the SRS system to figure out what is wrong. I've been looking all over the internet trying to find an enthusiast grade SRS scan tool but they all only seem to support the old body style up until 2007. Any ideas? I've checked the controller under the drivers seat and it doesn't have the sound dampening material over it like a TSB suggested as they are known to get damp and corode the connections in winter or rainy months. I'd take it in to have it looked at but the dealer will likely charge an arm and a leg to not fix the issue. Also I'm afraid any local garages won't be able to pull the codes. I'd prefer to do it myself.

You will have to have it read with a diagnostic scanner (like a Snap on Solus Pro). Most reputable repair shops will have a diagnostic scanner that will work to check it. You just about have to have one if you work on vehicles for a living these days.

So there's no current enthusiast grade scanners that will work?

If all your connectors are fastened propery under both front seats, then I would bet it is a front impact crash sensor. I replaced mine on my new body. The dealer said it is very common for the sensors to get corroded. There is a driver side and a passenger side and each is tucked under the frame. My drivers side was out and the dealer told me my passenger one would prolly blow out in a year or two( nice and reasurring) . Its like a 100 dollar part for a little square sensor made in mexico. Anyway I fixed it, couldnt stand looking at the little man blowing bubble gum lit up on my dash anymore

Would you happen to have a part number or place that I can pick up the sensors? I ordered some new wheels for the truck so when I go to have them put on I'll likely have them pull codes to make sure that is the case. With 50k miles on the truck and the salty winters here in PA I can almost guarantee its a corrosion issue. What gets corroded? The sensor itself or just the harness connection? Couldn't you just clean up the plug and use some dielectric grease? Do you have to clear the codes or does the light go out when its corrected?

Yes. I would also get it scanned first to make sure that is the case. The actual sensor goes bad. I bought my part from the gm dealer in the parts dept. since my truck wa sbeing serviced there anyway i just had them install it for me. Otherwise gmpartsdirect.com may have them. sorry i do not have part# but any dealer with a parts dept. could get that for you. I live in Wisconsin and we use tons of salt on the road here as well, definately the culprit

I wonder how often I'll be replacing these things (if that is the case). Makes me want to spray them with plastidip or something.
