2000 GMC Horn Not Working

Postby Bruce69Camaro [OP] » May 11 2011, 12:47pm

My horn stopped working on my 2000 GMC Sierra. We traced the problem to a loose ground under the airbag, so I guess you see where this is leading?

How do I remove the airbag to get to this ground?

From what I have been reading you need to press a tool such as a screwdriver or Lisle 55150 tool into the back of the steering wheel and then you should hear the pin pop loose and then do the other side and disconnect the wires.

Ok, my question is, we've been trying to push on the spring on the back of the steerwheel but nothing happens. Do I need to use two screwdrivers, to simulate the Lisle tool or can you do it with just one?

I need to get this fixed, it's getting inspected soon.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you

Bruce

Bruce, it great to hear you want to tackle this one, but when it comes to airbags and steering stuff, I would recommend leaving it to the pro's. This is something you want right, and with a warranty. Just my $0.02.

Yeah we kind of gave up and the guy that does my inspection said he would pop it off for me so that I don't get hurt in doing so.

We had the rear shroud off and my coworker noticed the ground wire looked like it came out of a slot or out of posistion and when he grounded it with a screwdriver the horn worked, so at least I don't have to worry that there is a break in the wire in the column.

Thanks
