2004 2500HD Won't start

Postby Chanteln [OP] » Jan 01 2013, 12:31am

Recently purchased a 2004 GMC 2500HD, 84000 miles on it. Ran like a champ from June to November.. The minute the cold rainy weather came, have now had 5 times the truck completely dead, no start, no click, no fuel pump, Nothing. Couple of times, turn the key, put the truck in drive, back in to park, turn the key off, turn the key back on, truck starts up. Last two times, Completely dead, nothing to get it started. Has now been at the dealer for 2 weeks, continuous intermittent problem. They have changed fuel relays (well, swapped them around) it'll start, then sits for a day and wont' start again. No codes showing at all. Starting to get Extremely frustrated. My first thought is bad starter or PCM...Anyone got any thoughts or experience with this??? Just really want my truck back and for it to be reliable!!

I see it being ignition switch, fuse block, ground related. Because you said no starter click, no fuel pump, nothing. Which are completely seperate circuits. Except for power supply which would be from ignition switch to fuse block. Then main ground like a engine block or head to frame grounds, or body to frame grounds

You say no fuel pump.Meaning you check fuel pump pressure?or you turned the ignition to on and there was no power to the pump?Possible ground problem but grounds like wet. Also when you said no nothing as in no radio/no dash lights ect.Need to isolate the problem

More details, sorry for being so vague. Turn the key on, dash lights, but Nothing else. No power to the pump. No click of the starter, absolutely no sound of anything starting up at all. Delay has replaced the fuel pump relays, works for a day or two, then go to start it, nothing again. No crank from the starter, no sound of the fuel pump, but power to the dash lights. They think it's either the starter or the pcm...BUT won't / cant' test those until the truck doesnt' start again. So far, days 9 & 10 at the dealer, the truck has started every time. I've suggested a ground or a loose wire, but they're totally dependant on the computer and the codes, can't seem to work on it old school. Not sure how things work with the newer trucks, but with my 99 suburban, we did old school when we had starter issues.
The truck ran great, no issues for the first three months I had it. Then with the cold damp NW weather, the issue reared it's ugly head. They are working on it, but I feel like they're missing something simply, like the suggestions below and wondering what everyone's thoughts were. Looks like you're thinking like me, a loose ground or a corroded wire. Again, the issue is intermittent, it does not happen all the time, but tends to do it after a long cold wet period.

thanks

my thinking is if it is a ground or loose wire the problem wont be there while the truck is sitting still.Going down the road and a loose ground would have the truck run not run run not run.The dealer has to isolate the area. However yousaid they found nothing wrong? You need to start from the beginning .Power starts here goes to here. Then from here power goes to wherever. They must find where to power stops.A good tech should be able to find it

That's my next step. The reason it's at the dealer is it's under warranty and if those parts they think are bad are in fact bad, I'd rather the warranty pay for them instead of the 1200+ chunk out of my pocket.

First time it happened, we thought it was the neutral position safety switch as if I messed with the gear shift, I could get it to start (the first two times it acted up on me) Then two weeks ago Thursday am it wouldn't start for me, towed it to the dealer that night (for the second time) they tried it the next am, wouldn't start, they tried to jump it, tried some other tricks, no start, swapped the fuel pump relays, fired right up. But they didn't think they had the issue resolved, wanted to keep it for another day to make sure the issue was fixed. Monday am, won't start again, put new fuel pump relays in and it started right up. They've had it since the last start up, periodically through out the day starting it up, starts every time. But according to the service manager, they are not confident they have the issue resolved, just a bandaid. I have suggested a loose or corroded ground, they are firm on their belief that it's the starter motor/solenoid or pcm. Yet, unless the truck does not start, they say there is no way to test either of those components. I only know how to work on trucks 99 or before, not the new fancy ones, but that does seem odd to me that they can't isolate one component. I have continually suggested a loose wire, as I just had to run lines in my old truck to find the nice loose one to my pcm :-) but not sure what else to do other than sit and wait and hope they fix it.

Extended warranty, covers all the major parts. They got it started today and they say there aren't any codes. So they have replaced the fuel pump relay and the starter pump relay and its' running. I find it odd that they say they can't test anything or find any codes if it's running. Wouldn't there be a code for the last time it didn't start?? I know my older truck shows old and pending codes when i run it.
