Need info on how to add remote to my power door locks

98 silverado power door lock remote

Postby duane4238 [OP] » Mar 26 2011, 8:33pm

I have a 98 Silverado 4x4 ext cab that I purchased new. It came with power door locks, but does not have the remote feature. You have to unlock with the key, which can be a problem in the winter. I'd like to add the remote feature seeing as the power locks are there. Local company will add it for $150 but it's not a GM unit, but aftermarket and they have to cut and splice and I don't like that. What I'm wondering is, what parts would be on a truck with the remote feature that are not on my truck? And would they be something I might pick up at the junk yard? I was thinking maybe it's just a remote transmitter module that plugs into a plug that would already be somewhere under the dash in my current harness. GM installed wiring harnesses that had all the connections for accessories but not all were added to every truck. Maybe I can just find the part I need and plug it in and get a remote control for the key chain. Anybody have any information or thoughts on this? Thanks, guys.
Duane

Maybe I'd be better off just spending the $150.

If you really want this accessory, purchase it from the aftermarket. Maybe it's time to add an alarm system? They come with keyless entry too you know?

Gordon,
I guess I'll go the aftermarket route, as you suggested, and get the alarm and keyless entry. I was apprehensive about this because my son had one installed on his car at Best Buy and had all kinds of problems. They really butchered the installation which caused problems with his radio and his dash and interior lights. I certainly won't go back there!

If you are going to install an aftermarket keyless entry I would suggest AutoPage or DEI, but please make sure not to go to any retail store. I would sugget to go a local radio shop that does the daily. I would check Yelp fo any feed back. My wife had a Viper remote start installed at Best Buy, and they messed up the entire system. The factory alarm was triggered and wouldn't let the car start. Make sure you do your research locally if this is the route you are going.
