My truck does the same thing. It won't come on for weeks then just pop on. I think it's the abs actuator wigging out.

Mine started out with just the ABS and Brake lights. Then it progressively got worse and now it's all the lights on the instrument cluster, the radio and the DIC turn off and the damn warning chime goes off. I cannot figure this out and I'm about ready to just bite the bullet and take it to a mech.

Abs and brake light problem

Postby Jac8.1 [OP] » Jan 05 2012, 1:11pm

Well let me know what they say so I can fix the problem for half the price. Lol I'm thinking it's the sensors in the hub assembly. I have had to replace both of them so far and I think I just got bad sensors. But there to expensive to replace just cause the sensors are bad.

i have had the same problem recently. i replaced the sensor and then a few days later the abs light came back on. (i had the abs trouble light codes cleared when i replaced the sensor) but if its not the sensor or you keep having to replace the sensor, just spend an extra $100 or so and get the whole wheel bearing hub assembly, comes with the speed/abs sensor already on it. because there is probably dirt or something like that getting in the bearings and on the sensor which is giving you a bad reading/throwing codes.

hope this helps.

I am new to the forum but I would suggest, because all your start up noises and indicator lights are coming on, the ignition switch is bad in the steering column. This is not the key cylinder but the activating switch in the column. It is not getting sufficient power to the instrument cluster.

I have the abs/brake indicator light and no speedometer on a 2001 1500HD Crew Cab and had to weed out the issues and that was in the diagnostic process. I think my issue is one of the three sensors on the transfer case.

Thanks for the suggestion but I have already put a new ignition switch in it and I have also tried the instrument cluster. I thought I had checked all the grounds before I did any of that but doing some more research has shown that I didn't. I'm going to try that this week and we'll see what happens.

Re: Abs and brake light problem

Postby BlastorPastor » Mar 05 2012, 3:16pm

I found my problem. The bozos who put the used tranny in before I got the truck plugged the front shaft speed sensor plug in the harness going to PCM and the PCM plug in the speed sensor on the transfer case for the front shaft.

GM made these two plug pig tails on the transfer case exactly the same except for the wire color. Therefore, I had to find out the color of the wires before I could solve my ABS/brake light problem.

Now the speedo works and all the lights are off.

Any luck on your issue?

I have heard of peoples ABS lights coming on and usually the problem was the electronic brake control module. It is underneath the driver's side door on the inside of the frame rail. When these go bad the EBCM will continue to run and your ABS light will come on.
