Can you buy back up cameras that have their own screen? something that looks similar to a gps that sticks to your dash or window?

Well yeh, thats what im doing... the screen is independent the camera. But youll jus get a small screen that fits wherever your wanting it to go and make sure its compatible with the camera you buy...

Or you can get a small voltage reg that does the job and is tiny as well. But I understand your reasoning. I figure, even if the camera dies, the same thing will still be around and for $12, I can afford to buy it. And I'm wanting to mount mine where it's not noticeable by possible thiefs and what not as well. Heck, I may just make a portable mounting system for now to use it only with the trailer and then looking into a more permanent solution later.

Yup, thats why I say get a cheap one... if it last a year ill just get another... but if I make a hole somewhere for it, i hope I can still get the same one... hell maybe ill just buy two of them now

ok, I was just wondering about that, because my back windows are limo and ive got 15 on the drivers windows, not bad during the day but pretty impossible at night, im going to add some extra lighting and I was looking into an easy/cheap camera as well, this sounds like a good idea.

You can buy several different sized monitors, 3.5" and 4.3" seem to be about the cheapest and most common sizes. Some come with mounts, similiar to GPS mounts as well. I'm undecided how I'm going to mount mine, but I'll be sure to post some pics when I do. I just have to wait for it to arrive from china now.

Mach- I plan on buying another camera, if I like the one I get, I figured I'd buy one, test it out and if I like it, buy another since the monitor can accept two inputs, I was thinking about mounting the second camera either on a trailer or maybe somewhere else on my truck. Or to keep it as a spare, I'm still undecided on everything.

I actually just had a crazy Idea, I might even look at mounting it in the rear wall just below the window, either recessed or just stuck to the back plastic. Most of the time when I back up, I'm looking out the back window at the trailer or whereever I'm backing up into, so that might be perfect for me. I plan on non permanent tests before I ever mount it permanently though. I thought about the visor, but I use my visors a lot and I like to slide them out for the side, so I may have trouble with the wiring. I've also though about mounting it into overhead console since mines the basic one, I'd figure out a mounting system where it pulls down, similiar to a lot of tv screens you see in mini vans. But yes, I'm going to try and mount everything, including the camera where thieves won't notice it. Although, I did think about using the spare cubby to the left of the HVAC panel and mounting it either on it or using it to make a mount for it. Or I could mount it closer to my ash tray. Everything is up in the air until I see what I like. :?

Well, I got my camera in the mail today. This thing is tiny! Which is what I wanted. I should have the monitor in a few days, and I don't plan on installing anything until I run some tests on it all first, like hooking it all up and verifying it works how I want and I'll see where I want the camera mounted once I can see it on screen as well.

Anyways, here's what the camera looks like. If it works as I want, I'll buy another one for either a backup or to use elsewhere.

Here's the hole bit it comes with.

THe only thing I"m puzzled by is there is one extra wire that I'm unsure what it's for. You have the power and ground closer to the camera and then there a red wire that is right at the yellow AV jack as well. The directions only say it's an ACC control line. So I'm not sure what it's for exactly, but I don't think I need it anyways.

I would bet that wire is a remote turn on for the camera. You wire the red to a constant 12V source, then that other red wire goes to the amp remote wire on the head unit (usually blue). This way, instead of wiring the camera to your reverse lights, you put it to a constant 12V, and whenever the radio is on the camera will be on. Gives you the ability to use the camera when not in reverse.

Not 100% sure about this, though. I would see if you can find a manual online for it somewhere to make sure.
