Charging system failure light on!

Charging system failure light on!

Postby tjbev21 [OP] » Nov 19 2012, 2:49am

so I went and got the truck a little muddy today, as im driving home the "charging system failure" light and red battery light came on. notice volts were at like 11-12.

I go to the car wash and spray down the engine to get the mud off, voltage then goes back to normal and light turns off, turn the truck off then back on and start driving home, get about 15 miles and the light pops back on and the voltage drops again. end up making it home but the voltage dropped all the way past 9 then abs and parking brake light turned on.

Im thinking its just a alternator, any thoughts?

thanks in advance

Alternator is my first guess. Can you get it to an auto parts store so they can check it out?, is it making noise? Also make sure battery cables are tight.

Im thinking so too, i took it to auto zone the battery was tested as fine just reading low voltage he said he couldnt test the alternator because the battery voltage was so low. checks the connections and they were all secure. not making any abnormal noises and runs great. brakes seem a little weak but other than that its fine.

All the alternators I've had tested I've had to take off and take into the store for them to put on a tester. Not sure if all auto parts stores can do that though, I use Car Quest.

It's gotta be the alternator. This morning I start it and it goes back to normal voltage then jumps back down to 10 then back up to 14 then back down. So my thoughts are the alternator. I am hearing a bit of squeezing in the serpentine system somewhere.

Charging system failure light on!

Postby Machster69 » Nov 19 2012, 2:05pm

Well the system is designed to cut the charge on and off on the nnbs. But ide still suspect the belt slipping causing a hiccup in the spinning of the alt/brakes. Ide also check the tensioner. And obviously pull the alt and do a bench test...

Do the alternators charge on and off on NBS as well?

OP- did the alternator show ANY signs of acting up before the mudding trip?

No the alternator and everything charged/ worked fine prior to missing the whole engine bay was covered in very watery mud which was sprayed off. Possible that the belt is slipping on the alt pulley
