Convert OEM rear view camera to always on

Convert OEM rear view camera to always on

Postby Jackie_Treehorn [OP] » Feb 14 2013, 7:03pm

I have a 2011 2500 Silverado with the factory rear view camera system. Since I have a camper shell on the back of the truck, the rear view mirror is of no use to me. I would like to change the reverse only operation of the camera to always on while the truck is running.

On the back of the OEM OnStar rear view mirror there is a wiring harness. I'd like to know what pins control the powering up of the camera. I'd also like to figure out if I could steal power from another pin up there to operate the built in monitor all the time.

I did search, but couldn't find the info I was looking for. Hopefully this is a simple process.

Thank you all for the help!

I can't help you out at all with the full time camera, but I am curious as to see how your truck looks with the camper; do you have any pics? Also if you've ever owned a double din radio, those legally have to have a lock on them which makes it impossible to play movies and such through them when in drive. I'd imagine however people short wire those it would be the same process!

I know on the double din radios that are aftermarket to have your ::display:: *full-time* illegal and you should never ground out the parking brake wire to make them capable of playing whatever you'd like via your screen driving or otherwise. As far as the backup monitor in the rear view mirror I am currently in mine trying to figure a solution to that problem as well. Will post back with any insight.

My understanding of these cameras are there is a ground, power switched and then a third power ie reverse line that gets power when put in reverse. The wires usually connect in the driver kick panel footwell area in a block called the MBEC mid bused electrical center. To make on all the time test wires on back of mirror, find the one that goes to 12v when out in reverse, write it down, then check other wires on back of plug and find wire that is switched 12v (which means has no power when key is off but 12v with key on). Next jumper wire that is switched 12v to the wire you found in step one (ie reverse) connect and wah lah you should be set.

I think for you wanting to turn on when wanted ie checking the trailer while driving down the road, could use my suggestion above excepts rather then jumper, could add a switch the jumpers the wire when switch is pushed in to make circuit complete.
