Died while driving, Wont crank

Died while driving, Wont crank

Postby elietz [OP] » Nov 10 2012, 7:51pm

I have a 2003 silverado 6.0L, died on the road yesterday while on my way home with a 22' enclosed trailer I just bought. Now it will not even crank over. Load tested the battery and its perfect. swapped relays/fuses, no luck.
Couple things I had issues with prior to this were when getting up over 70mph or a little higher RPM the check engine light would start flashing, slow down and it would stop. Also occasionally on start up, the brake lights in the dash would come on and a message saying check brake system (cycle the power and it was fine). I did get that message when the truck died yesterday.
I'm at a loss here... I tried jumping the starter but I couldn't see up there too well. It did spin but did not engage the flywheel, prob just had wrong terminals.
Any help would be appreciated! thanks, Erik

I've experienced every problem you have described, except for the starting issue. Have you ever had the starter tested? I know those can go bad...

Once you do get it started, have your mechanic do a "crank relearn procedure"; that will get rid of the flashing check engine light at high freeway speed.

I'd agree, it's either a bad starter or the engine is locked up.

Died while driving, Wont crank

i have absolutely no idea how to work on a diesel... but i know when that check engine light is flashing on any car its super important to take care of it asap. my bet is a locked engine since it happened while you were driving.

how would the starter cause it if the truck is already started? aside from the wires being melted on a header or something. I'm not trying to debate. just curious. haha

The OP has the 6.0L gas engine, not the 6.6L diesel engine.

LOL that's fine, but you made a great point- why would it be the starter if it died while running?

Died while driving, Wont crank

Postby Mikez94 » Nov 12 2012, 9:29pm

haha. only way it would be the starter is if a wire melted or got cut going to it. it happened on my 1980 camaro & one side of the wire was stuck to the header & the other was hanging

The solenoid (on the starter) could have a problem internally, causing it to do the same as a cut or melted wire.
