Interior lights shorting out

Interior lights shorting out

Postby davep [OP] » Jun 05 2011, 7:39pm

Hello everyone, I'm new here and have found this site very interesting and probably great help in the future.

My problem is no vanity lights for the visor mirrors, when you open the cover when the lights are on my dash turns off, no map lights dash also turn off when button is pushed. the regular interior lights work fine when you open the doors or by switch, they will turn off if you push the button for map on that side and no light will be on. Any one have any ideas? Thanks

Check the fuses first.

Its sounds like you may have a wire with a bare spot in it and when you open your vanity covers it shorts the rest of them out, this problem won't always blow a fuse but is a fairly common problem in most electronics. Good Luck!

The map and vanity lights run on the same fuse, the go thru the BCM. I just had an 07 Silverado in the shop with the same exact problem.

I checked for B+ (battery voltage with everything off) at the connector and found 0.0V. Usually a DVM will show a few to a few dozen mV on an open circuit. 0.0V usually means short, but check volts before ohms so you don't smoke your meter.

When I did check ohms, I got zero there: dead short!

If you're not comfortable with wiring, find someone who is. You need to be able to read a wiring diagram.
