LED turn signal bulb issues

Front LEDs turn signals work but directional signal indicators stay on.

LED turn signal bulb issues

Postby bbrown [OP] » Oct 31 2011, 8:21pm

So I decided to convert all my bulbs (this topic deals with turn signals only) to LEDs and I knew the flasher module would need swapping; so I did that and there are no issues with flash rate. The issue I'm having is with the turn signal indicators in the dash cluster. Whenever the headlights or parking lights are ON the turn signal indicators stay on constantly. This doesn't happen when the lights are off; the signal indicators behave normally then. So, finally my question: Is there any way to make the indicators work properly without installing resistors? I know the LEDs have much less resistance than the incandescent bulbs but the LEDs do light up and blink as if there is no problem at all. I've just got to solve this signal indicator issue. Thanks in advance for any help. Oh, and if I do need resistors; no other option; how many ohms do they need to be? Bulbs are 3157s.

Cheers!

Sounds like there may be a short in the system somewhere. I would try systematically unhooking lights and flashers one at a time until it goes away. Then replace the last thing you unhooked.

I'm pretty sure there is no short... when I put the old bulbs back in place, everything works perfectly. Only the new LED bulbs are creating the issue.

Right, I meant a short in the new bulbs, sorry I should have specified. Try replacing one at a time to narrow it down.

Yeah, I checked the new bulbs too with my 12volt cordless tool battery and they work just like the old bulbs with one exception. The old bulb has 2 filaments that burns one for dim and both for bright while the LEDs just go from dim too bright. At least they seem to be functioning correctly. I'm thinking resistance because the marker bulb on the same circuit is really dim with the LED plugged in but gets really bright with the old bulb plugged in. Kinda confusing....

I finally figured this one out. The vastly decreased resistance of the LED bulbs caused my gauge cluster turn signal indicator lights to stay on when the truck lights were on. I ended up wiring in resistors on the flasher circuits right at each front bulb. That fixed the problem. I running all LED lights except headlights, fogs, and DRLs.

You should swap the DRLs to LED as well. Might as well have them all done right?

Yeah, I want to for sure but I've heard some bad rumors that the LED DRLs will heat up so much that they can melt the housing of some of the older plastics. Mines is a 2001 and I just don't know if the rumors are true or not.

Not true at all. LEDs that small put out very little heat. I've used them to replace the lights in my steering wheel controls to get rid of the hot spots that incandecents make.

Here's some info.

Re: LED turn signal bulb issues

Postby aggieguy » Feb 04 2012, 1:20am

Ok since talking about led turn signal bulbs i have a question. Im stock bulbs are 3157K and my parking lights work. I ordered 3157 dual circuit led bulbs no parking lights but however they work when i turn the turn signal on. If i manually turn on the parking lights i have power at my tail lights but not the front. Does the K in 3157K make a difference than a regular 3157 LED bulb? Has this happen to anyone else? Where can i find a 3157K LED bulb??? Help?? LOL thanks for your time.
