Radio communications install

Postby GMman [OP] » Sep 07 2010, 1:28am

Just bought a new 2010 GMC Sierra SLE Crew 4x4 Z71 and now time for putting in my radio communications equipment. Wanting to put remote head radio and main part under back seat. I will adding the second battery in parallel and running 12v # 12 under the truck from second battery and back into the back of the cab.. Will either add NMO mount in roof or install roll bar in back of truck.

For the question, is there already a hole in the back around back seat of drivers side ? Heard there might be a vent hole there, but haven't pulled the trim yet. Would like to hear from those that own same year and like truck. Pictures, links to articles, etc are greatly welcomed.

Now for the second question, to those that have radios installed, have you had any interference problems ? My radio is an HF / VHF / UHF combo with 100 watts output. Appreciate you reading.
Thank you
Ken

I would run bigger then 12 gauge to link two batteries, min would be 4 gauge for that distance, just drill a hole in the firewall, there is a ton of room on the drivers side if you remove a few things out of the way. I have two runs of 0 gauge ran thru at that location. And as long as you are grounded good you shouldn't have any noise/interference issues. I have only seen that if you boost the factory radio antenna for stronger signal they get some noise.

As to the second battery, you should find there are 2 battery trays under the hood - one in the "traditional" location (driver's side front corner) and a second on the passenger's side by the hood hinge. Be sure to use a rubber grommet after drilling the hole in the firewall to avoid any chance of the metal edge rubbing through the insulation on the wire. And put the inline fuse on the engine side of the firewall. Wouldn't hurt to put another one inside the cab. Safety first!
If you want to do what you want to do, you have to do what you have to do.

I use big 0 gauge between the two batteries and run 12 gauge to the one radio for a 100 watts or less. If running amp of 500 watts I use at least a 4 gauge wire. I just thought there might be a place to come up into cab from back without drilling a hole. Would have looked today, but raining all day.

There is an easy place to bring in power wires on these trucks in the front. You can bring it into the front cab at the emergency brake grommet or if it is a manual transfer case the floor shifter grommet. Works for me anyway. I always fuse both lines at the battery and then there are two fuses at the radio.

Appreciate the comments
Thank you
