Speedometer Problems

Postby MorpheusHusky [OP] » Mar 16 2012, 7:30pm

Today while driving around I noticed that my speedometer would either stop working or be off by about 50 MPH. All the rest of my gauges are working fine still its just my speedometer. It was working this morning on my way to work. Im leaving for a road trip in about an hour and dont have time to take it to the shop or tear apart the dash right now. Anyone know if it might be something simple? Ive never had this happen before on any of my previous vehicles so I dont know how to even go about starting to diagnose it. If its something too complicated I will have to wait till I get back and just use my GPS as a speedometer for the trip. Thanks for any advice and tips in advance!

your stepper motors in the IPanel are starting to fail. I had this guy rebuild mine ($125) and they work perfect, fast turnaround. You can drive with panel out, doesnt hurt anything. In the short term if you disconnect your battery the speedo will usually return to the correct position

A friend of mine had the same thing happen to him, after the speedometer went the gas gauge went, then the tachometer, so I would get it fixed ASAP ha.

Ok so the whole drive yesterday the speedometer was off by about 5 to 30 MPH the whole time. When fixing my problem do I have to replace the whole panel or just a little part for my speedometer? How hard would it be to hook up an after market cluster if I wanted to go that route?

The only thing I could find was some gauge overlay that would change what the face of the gauges look like.

So you think the best way to fix it is what Jwh463 said?

That is probably what I would have done if it were my truck.
