What do I need for my HID's to work

What do I need for my HID's to work

Postby 95LT1Z28 [OP] » Jan 08 2011, 1:26am

I just ordered a set of HID lights for my truck for the low beams and foglights. I ordered them from krypton bulbs, but ive been reading around and it seems like I will either need to buy that relay harness so they work with the DRL's without an issue. Or I can remove the DRL fuse and turn the headlights on manually. Am I right in saying this? Or will the ballasts still power up if I leave everything alone and hook them up without the relay and keep the fuse intact. I have HID lighting on my camaro and my quad already but none of those had DRL's everything was a straight forward plug an dplay.

If you do not care whether your DRL's come on or not, then pull the DRL fuse. You can then turn on the headlights manually if you want to. I used the relay, because I wanted the DRL's on. See this thread: Using HID Lights

If you pull the DRL fuses they still come on when its dark, they are just not on 24/7 like they are with the normal DRL function. I pulled the fuse and works great.

You don't 'need' anything for them to work. It's all plug and play. If you're concerned about the DRL function then you can buy the optional relay and forget about em. Either way they're gonna work fine, honestly. Don't drink the 'internet kool-aid.'

So without the relay the DRL's will still work like stock?

Yes they will still work like stock. The issue people talk about is drls replaced with HIDs will sometimes not be as bright as they think they should be. HID retailers suggest a relay to fix this issue of tempermetal HIDs. I know of thousands of nbs trucks running around with no relays and they work fine. I suggest installing the kits and deciding for yourself whether or not you need the relays afterwards.

This always gets made in to a bigger deal than it really is. You'll be fine either way man.

+1 on what LBZ said. No relay on my truck, just pulled the fuse that controls the DRL's. Now they only come on when its dark out or I manually turn them on.

Well so far, I am the only one who believed the hype, and put in the relay. Bill, stop back and let us know how it works without the relay, and if you choose to keep the DRL's on. Thanks.
