1997 Chevrolet Silverado losing antifreeze

Postby srv2010 [OP] » Aug 08 2011, 9:14pm

I have a couple questions about my truck losing antifreeze. First one is should the black plastic box under the dash be hot? Also, is it bad if you hear water trickling in the box. It has went down to about the first set of coils when I look the first time after filling it up and taking the air bubbles out.

MY 97 did too... It was running hot and I was ready to change out the water pump, thermostat and all the hoses... had everything in hand for the job. Then I happen to check the coolant level and I was over a gallon low. Filed up up and my temps went back to normal.

I had the truck 4 years and never seen it leak anywhere so I never found out were the coolant went. I did often hear water moving around in the cab but never check the black box for heat.

How often do you have to fill up the coolant?

Everythime I drive it the coolant goes down to the top set of coils in the radiator. So whenever I drive it I have to fill it up. It is more of my winter vehicle, but I still want to check it out.

If it's leaking anywhere inside, you would probably smell it.

have you turn on the defrost for a few and see if you smell anti freeze? if you do smell anti-freeze that means your heater core is leaking...

It seems like it possibly is supposed to drop to the point that it is. It hasn't leaked more than what it did. I still can hear a trickling though.
