2009 Sierra 5.3 - 6.0 Swap

Postby travelin'Z71 [OP] » Jul 19 2012, 5:34pm

Real quick.... '09 LQ9 5.3, lost oil pressure, broke a rod. 112,000m. Oil pump failed. I really don't want to put another 5.3 in there and would like to go to a 6.0 from a '09 Vmax 1500. Its a running take out with the trans, tcase, all wiring, and fr. driveshaft. Has anyone done this? Do I need an ECU or is it bolt up and plug up and play? Do I have to use an AFM equipped 6.0 since my 5.3 is / was.
Also if I stay with a 5.3 I want to use a non AFM motor. I'd probably run a LQ9 block (aluminum) with non AFM equipped heads... What would I need to do to remove AFM from the ECU? I'm pretty confident that a little head work, an intake, and a free flowing exhaust will outgain that stupid system.
6.2s are waaay too expensive, and I'd like to stay in the '08-'09 range to avoid backyard engineering.. so no, not going to happen.
I'm in kinda of a hurry. I work on the road and I'm doing this in a rented garage. while driving a rental Camry ( ) so $$ is going down quick.... and I don't want to loose out on this motor if It'll work so any help is appreciated!

Also any LS / GMT900 gurus I've got a budget of $6500. What would you suggest? I want to replace the trans too, it has a hard 2-3 shift that developed at 85k. And with the motor coming out I want to do it all at once and essentially have a brand new drivetrain...

I believe you want to get the ECM from the 6.0l, I don't believe it's interchangable with the 5.3.

Did the swap, truck has 10k on the motor now. runs strongs, gets 20mpg highway and tows like a 3/4 ton. with the bags and bilsteins, combine that with the extra HP and itll move 10,500-11,000 no prob. even have had 1200#s in the bed with only minimal squatting.

Sweet swap, you made quick work of it. Don't get too carried away with the extra ponies, you still have the same brakes.

Did have them. I have already done the SSBC rear disc swap, added cyro-tech rotors, green stuff pads, SS lines, and an electric brake controller.
