5.0 Liter Engine control Module replacement

Postby Killain [OP] » Mar 23 2013, 9:51pm

I have a 1990 Restored 4X2 5.0 liter V8 Vin 'H'. I'm anticipating changing the engines ECM if for no other reason than it's 22 years old, but I am experiencing some issues like the "Service Engine Soon" light coming on for no known reason. Now I could pull the module in my truck and send it out for rebuilding, cost $ 215.00 and the truck is dead in the water as far as moving. OR I can buy a completely rebuilt unit with my exact unit including the part number and prom in it for a little over $125.00 ?

So I'm not sure of which way to go, and I certainly don't want to do this job twice, but the savings are very luring to me. But I don't want to make a mistake. What would you do in my position? :?: Thank you guys ! :?

Didn't think these were a wear item and need to be replaced from time to time, thought they were one of those things that either work or don't.

I don't know, my dads 87 Chevy is still running it's original ECM and it has 550000+ kms on it. If you're having trouble with it, then yea it may be time to replace it. I would find out what is causing the engine light to be on, because if you don't fix it now, then it will come on again in the new ECM.

Thats your best bet, find out whats wrong and fix that first. Then run the truck for a while, and see how it goes. I don't know that I would replace an ECM that is still working fine.

Absolutely, just changing parts for the sake of a change could very well cause a problem itself. Granted the ECM is 22 years old, I just want to fix the one issue, OR find out why it sets a code. Then if all things point to a weak ECM, I can always do that. But I just want to fix one problem at a time. Thank you guys ! ;)
