swap a 6.0l into my silverado 1500

5.3 to 6.0l engine swap

Postby darkness777 [OP] » Aug 22 2010, 9:20pm

i have a 2004 silverado 1500 z71 with a 5.3l and i wanted to build it up to haul and tow more and also get better fuel economy. i bought a 6.0 to put into my 64 c-10 but it wouldn't be used as a truck in that truck it would be a show piece so to speak...i feel like i would be wasting a perfectly good engine that i could put to better use in my daily driver/ work truck. my main concerns are that the 6.0 wont bolt in right and i will have to spend money on fabrication, a wiring harness, adapters, and the computer. i was just wondering if anyone knew how the 6.0 would bolt in and what i need to buy...

Thanks,
Doug

Changing from a 5.3 to a 6.0 for fuel mileage? Ummmm. :?

Stay with the engine you have.

First off welcome to the site we are glad to have you here. To answer your question, your gut feeling may be correct i would think that the motor mounts would be different as well as the wiring harness.

Being able to haul and tow more is not entirely dependent on the engine itself. The entire drivetrain would need to be swapped out to achieve what you're going for.

Also, what would you do with the perfectly good 5.3? This seems like a waste to me with little or no benefit.

not so much for mileage but i have heard that the 6.0 can get pretty good mileage in the 3/4 ton trucks, but mostly it would be for hauling and towing more. the 5.3 would go into my 64 or the nova thats being planned for my wife...anyways i plan on doing some modifications to the entire truck for the most part ive got the 6.0 and the 4l80 that came with it. i can easily change out the gears for the purpose of towing i just want to maximize the trucks potential using what i have laying around...if that any sense to anyone.

If you heard the 6.0 gets pretty good mileage in 3/4 ton trucks, someone was pulling your leg! I kept my 93 and 98 1/2 ton Silverados with 5.0L but traded in my 02 Silverado 2500HD on a new Honda Civic and have never looked back. That 6.0 got UNDER ten miles to the gallon and that was with a tailwind while going downhill with foot off the gas! Save your time, energy, and money and keep the 5.7! You should be getting between 15 and 16 mpg if everything is up to snuff.

Yep, Dads 08, 2500 6.0 gets 10-14 if he has no load, and it took 15 trips to chevy dealerships to reprogram the tranny and comp to get that. Pulling his 8000# fifth wheel he is lucky to get 8. 6.0 does not get good gas milage

If what you want is towing power stay with the 5.3. What i would do is change your gear ratio. That depends on tire size. Stock go with 4.10 mabey even 4.56 but with 4.56 you will lose gas mileage. Larger tires i would go with 4.56 or even 4.88. By changing gear ratio you will have more get off the line power when towing. I have even seen sometimes better gas mileage because your not working the motor as hard.
Changing ratio will not make your truck haul more weight. To do that you would need to change axles and springs.
