Cold Air Intake?

Postby TheGMCRiggerTheGMCRigger is online! [OP] » Sep 20 2012, 3:05am

Well, i been thinking about a cold air intake for a while, just not sure what kit or how to do it. I don't want to be messing with sensors or anything. Also what are your opinions on a cold air intake? Good Idea or no? Also what brand what you go with?

I am a big K&N guy but I have heard airraid is pretty good too. Pretty easy to install, just unbolt everything and bolt the new stuff in. Only sensors you should have to mess with is the MAF, if your truck has one. If im not mkistaken '96 and up trucks were fuel injected. My dad had a '95 GMC 1500 Ext. Cab short bed with a 350 that was carbureted.

Hi GMC,

I personally believe CAI's are the way to go. I love the sound you get from them at WOT, and also believe some horsepower is to be gained. I used Volant because the air box is enclosed, and tube from air box to throttle body is polycarbonate plastic, not alum. I also installed the snorkel from Volant, to get a more "Ram Air" effect at speed... If my CAI improved the fuel mileage, it was not by much. Maybe, a half mile per gallon. It's more for my own personal benefit (looks and sound)...

On most CAI's you buy, the MAF will have to be re-attached to the "new" intake tube (no big deal), and the stock system (air box/intake tube) will be removed...

I hoped this helped, :D

According the black bear... The airaid MIT made more hp than the other popular options... So I found a deal on a used one w/ an AFE dry filter (stock replacement)... I also hacked the front & bottom of the stock airbox & the plate that the airbox mounts to.

I'd also installed a straight through muffler shortly before...

The two mods coupled together netted much better throttle response & much better part throttle oomph!!! Overall I've been highly impressed!!! Especially considering that the stock intake is pretty much a CAI from the factory... Pulling air from the fenderwell...

I cost is an issue, get the Airraid MIT tube. It outperforms most CAIs anyway and is cheaper.

It looks like you guys are recommending airaid, so i'm going to see if i can find just the tube for a decent price and then buy a K&N filter.

I'm struggling to find an Airaid MIT, just the tube no filter. I want to put a k&n. But on airaid site you can't buy just the tube, what sites would you recommend for just buying the tube. I tried, auto zone, advance, summit racing, ebay, etc.
