Coolant leak along block

Postby steelbear [OP] » Sep 12 2010, 3:08am

95 5.1, 2WD Silverado has coolant around driver's side block line just below the plugs. The rear bolt on the exhaust manifold is broken. I pulled it out and seen it had broken in the block. Could this bolt be related to the leak? If not, any suggestions on where the leak could be coming from? Engine has only 80,000 miles on it. Thanks for your help!, Steelbear

Sounds like maybe an intake gasket leaking coolant or the head gasket.

Thanks Gordon! The leak is below the plugs, and seems to be coming from the rear near the oil filter. Would that indicate head gasket more than an intake gasket?

Well those engines are notorious for leaking around the intake gasket and the coolant "sneaks" around the corner. Look real close for that first. Also at the heater hose connections. It also could be the head gasket but you also have some soft plugs in the bell housing area that are hard to see. Remove the inspection cover for the torque converter and look up. Obvously I cannot see what you see but you need to be certain before you start removing parts. There is special equipment out there where they put dye in your coolant and shine a special light on the engine to find the real trail of the leak. Good luck.

also good way to tell, is have coolant system presure tested. It will run out and you will beable to tell where coming from.

Good thought...That may be a cheap way to confirm leak source. Thanks
