Corrosion where radiator hose enters engine block

Postby jgoverman [OP] » Nov 02 2011, 1:55am

Hi everyone,

New guy here looking for some advice. I have a 98 silverado, and I recently noticed my engine overheating so I took it in to pepboys. It turns out my engine block had corroded where the radiator fitting screws in. Their solution was to insert a new fitting with RTV slathered around it and they charged me $500!!! A week later its leaking fluid again, and pepboys wont do anything about it. I called a few other places and they said they would have to pull the engine and re-bore the hole to fix it, very pricey. My question is weather this is my only solution, or are there any other ideas? Thanks.

from what you said i would be steaming out my ears at pepboys. i'd drive my happy AZZ back down there and park it in front of the service bays till they refunded my money................. then i'd probably get towed and fined but digress. you got fudged.
oh and for $700 you can find a used lm7 5.3 to replace yours.
my advice would be to think about how long you plan to keep the truck. the cheap option would be to epoxy the fitting in place "not RTV" if you like the truck and want to keep it around the get the engine rebored/welded or replace the engine.

Doesn't the 98 silverado have the old style small block? Worst case (and I mean really worst case) you would have to replace the intake manifold and the thermostat housing. I could see that costing $500. What they did should have cost MAYBE $75.

Did you mix regular tap water with your coolant last time you flushed your radiator? If so then that is most likely the cause of the corrosion. Supposed to use distilled water. But other than that I'd be raising hell at Pep Boys until they either fix the problem or give you your money back.
