cranks but won't start!

Postby duane4238 [OP] » Apr 26 2011, 10:23pm

My '98 Silverado with 5.0l was driven yesterday. Went in the garage today and it won't start. It will crank and crank and almost start but that's it. I can hear the fuel pump run so fuel should be OK. I hooked up my scanner and there are no codes. Truck ran fine yesterday. Only thing I know of to check is the ignition module. I'll take that out tonight and have it tested. Any other suggestions? I can't even drop it off at the repair shop. :(

thanks for the suggestion. I just got back in from the garage and I have spark, so the ignition system has just been ruled out as the problem. Now, I guess I have to check the fuel system. I can hear the fuel pump running, but I don't know how to check if the fuel is getting to the engine. I guess I'll replace the fuel filter in the morning and see if that's it. Any one with suggestions, feel free to chime in. Thanks!

get a fuel pressure gauge, tester. Connect it at the fuel rail and check the fuel pressure when cranking the engine over. Post back what it reads when have have tested this

Pull a spark plug and see if it's wet after cranking.

Problem solved. After changing dist cap and rotor and new plugs she runs like a top. It's amazing how time and miles slip by between tuneups. The last time I did one was at 80,000 miles and now I have 170,000 miles. Kind of embarrassing to let that slip. Thanks for the suggestions.

I have a 1998 chevy silverodo with 5.7 v8 4 wheel drive that cranks over and over but won't start. I have replaced the plugs and wires, ignition modular, coil and coil wire new battery, have 65 psi at the engine and fuel pump is coming on and my truck still won't crank. I did see 2 ground wires, one from the battery and one on the opposite side by the engine that were connected to the frame. Im a lady, my husband passed away a while ago and I have some knowledge of back yard mechanics, but I don't know what to do any more and can't afford a shop, could someone give me some ideal of what to do next? Thank you

Are there any codes (is the check engine light on)? A lot of times the crank position sensor can go bad causing this. Unfortunatly with your truck it won't be much of a back yard mechanic fix. You will probably need access to a diagnostic scanner (not a code reader) to properly diagnose the problem. I would also check the fuel pressure.

I have had 3 diagnostic run and it won't show a code, so guys I decided I would take the dist. cap and rotary off and take a look at it.(the reason I didn't do that first is because a guy at a garage the day it broke down said he took it off and it was fine) So I guess he just took me money cause I believed him. I put the new cap and rotary on and it started right up. Iam so happy. That truck has been sitting since April. Nothing should have been that hard. I think I'll go see the garage guy and give him a piece of my mind, why is it they like to take advantage of women, they think most women don't know and their probably right. I just settle for being happy its running again. Thank you for your advice. Judy, from wallace, north carolina
