factory dexos oil question?

Postby ratpower396 [OP] » Feb 12 2012, 5:49pm

Just a quick question is the factory gm dexos oil that came from the factory in my sierra a synthetic oil or is it a dino based oil?? Closing in on my first oil change & cant make up my mind what oil I want to use that wont void warrantee or cost $100 an oil change.. I only expect to put on approx 10000 miles per year so its not like I would be changing it every couple months..

Thanks

I asked when I had my free oil change at the dealer and they use a synthetic blend.

Yes, it is a synthetic blend. A conventional oil cannot meet the dexos spec, at least not yet.
GM buys it's oil from the lowest bidder. Get a couple 1000 miles on the truck, then get that junk out of there and upgrade to a full synthetic. There is a TON of commentary here on the site about dexos oil, warranty implications, and recommendations for WAY better oil. Here are a few to get ya started....

That's just 2 of many. It's a very hot topic around here.

From what I've read the factory fill is the AC Delco oil which is made by Exxon/Mobil.

I have not studied the OE oil by Amsoil. I know that the XL oil equals or exceeds most of the Mobil 1 measurements. I do know that Amsoil products are highly regarded by many here, and around the industry. I've had good luck with the XL oil, and will be sticking with it!
