harmonic balancer bolt?

harmonic balancer bolt?

Postby RCRUZ [OP] » Feb 03 2013, 8:41pm

I just bought a reman 5.7 to replace my 1994 silverado and have a question on hormonic balancer. The motor that I got does not have threads in front of crank to hold harmonic balancer. Is there a such thing also how would I install balancer with installer tool with no thread?

Thanks

Man, that must be an old engine that you bought to replace it. I know the older small blocks didn't have a bolt, but all the new ones (late 60's and on) did. The only way you can get it on without a bolt hole is with a hammer and a block of wood. Does the new engine at least have the hole in the crank snout that you could tap out?

yes it does have the hole but no thread. The block is newer set up for TBI, The shop where I get my motors from I have been buying from them since 1983 and all they do is GM. Must have been and old crank that was gone through and put in.

Since it's got the hole you should be able to but the right tap and tap it yourself. Put some grease on the tap while you do it so it will hold the metal that gets cut away and doesnt get into the engine (assuming you have it already put together. I've tapped a few before and it's not hard. Just make sure you keep the tap straight while you get it started.

Would it be safe to leave as is without tapping out?

You could, but I wouldn't want to. They used to not put a bolt on them when they first made the small blocks, but then they started putting them in. I'd be afraid it would work it's way off, even though it is a pressed fit. It's easy and cheap to tap it and add the bolt. I would put the bolt in if it were me.
