How to remove fan from water pump?

Postby donsom [OP] » Apr 25 2010, 11:13pm

How would I remove the fan blade from the water pump on a 5.3 engine, 2003 chevrolet silverado 4x4?

Do I need a special wrench for it?

If its like the fan off my old 4.3L V6, the fan is screwed on to the water pump. You need a big wrench, not sure of the size, and if I remember correctly, its reversed thread. I measured mine and just cut a wrench out of some scrap plate metal that was in our shop.

I just replaced the fan on my 5.0 and all it was was 4 studs screwed into the water pump. You just wedge a screwdiver between the studs and loosen the nut

I had a bit of a problem with the fan on my 04 Trailblazer. I wound up removing the water pump with the fan still installed and still couldn't get it off on the bench because the tool made for it wasn't available locally. I had to take it to a dealer and they had it off in a few minutes. If I remember correctly, it was the fan clutch that I was replacing and that caused the problem. Not sure how similar yours would be to my old TB, but it's a thought.
