low oil pressure message

Have a silverado 3500 2007 and 2011. The 2007 has 200,000 on it and just started having the low engine oil message display when first starting then it goes away. This truck sits for a few days at a time. Anybody have any ideas other than that unmetionable one  that requires a new engine?

is it the low oil level or the pressure light? if it is the oil pressure light have you changed the oil filter lately? there are certain filters that will fit but don't have the check valve in them causing the oil cooler to drain back into the oil pan when it sits and you wont have oil pressure until it refills

Speaking of recent oil changes, if it has had one and the "low oil level" indicator is on, it may have a stuck oil level float. Sometimes they will stick in the "down" position when you drain the oild during a change. You may try tapping the pan with a rubber mallet to dislodge the float and have it return to the level the oil is at.

Thanks for the answers. Yes the oil is changed regularly actually it tells me when to change it but it gets done every 6000 if it doesn't request it. This may be an STP filter that I put on this one and I usually use Fram. I have been playing with it and actually it will not do it if I use the truck within two days. If I go three days it will show up. The engine shows no record of an error message from it going off.

no more than it would cost I would try a new filter it sounds like the oil cooler is draining back into the oil pan or some how the oil pump is loosing its prime

Try an AC/Delco fiter. They are OEM, and good quality. At least you will narrow down the possible issue.

I just noticed on this thread that the heading and the message do not match. I was addressing the message and not the heading. Does the truck have a "low oil level" message or a "low oil pressure" message? There is a big difference between the two (of course, really low oil level can cause low/no oil pressure).
