Oil Overfill - Vortec 4300

Postby 001500 [OP] » Mar 20 2012, 10:29pm

Hello- I have a Votec4800. Changed the oil with 5 quarts. Thinking I had a larger engine, I added another 10 oz of oil. The dipstick is almost at the 4th hole of "max fill" . Is it bad to leave it as is or should I drain some (not worth the effort?).... in other words, did I cause my truck anyharm with the overfill numbers above?

Sorry for misprint, I have 4800... 4.8 liter. I put in an entire 5 gallon jug and then by mistake added an extra 10 oz's (filling some of filter and topping off what I thought was an underfilled dipstick.... my mistake).

So do I leave well enuf alone, nothings leaking or do I drain?

So after starting the engine and letting it run a few minutes, what does the dipstick read?

Its at MAX fill on the dip (cold check 3 circles are filled with oil, hot check its all 4 max level)... but generally, how much is "suggested" for a 4.8L 2WD V8 silverado??? There are so many varied opinions on this over the internet.

New vehicle for me, sorry for the newbie question.

It should be fine. Basicly it sounds like you overfilled it by about 1 quart.

Hi thanks for responding. So your judging this by the circle punchouts on the dipstick?

I checked the bottle I "overfilled" with. I used 13 oz. from that quart and the entire 5 quart container which actually comes out to a half quart overfilled if the 4.8L SFI takes just a hair under 5 quarts..... but alot of info online says a 4.8 takes 6quarts

This just adds to my confusion.I hope I dont sound to freaked out by this whole screw up!

p.s. my manual or haynes neither mention the suggested volume nor warns about overfilling??

The 4.8 should take 6 quarts. So, if you have the 4.8 you should be fine, maybe just a bit over full.

so are you saying theres a line-four holes-another line on the dipstick? i think you filled it up just enough with a little room let for more oil. there should not be any markings or holes after the max fill line. if your between the two lines your good.
