RE: Synthetic Oils

RE: Synthetic Oils

Postby 1500VHO [OP] » Jan 15 2012, 4:36am

In shop talk there were some questions about synthetic oils... As ALWAYS, people have their favorites and reasons for using the oils they use. I'm just posting these test links for everyone's review and general knowledge... Please do not shoot the messenger... I use Pennzoil Platinum, because I get a great deal on it for my local guy. In the future, I will look at Amsoil... Z15 gave me some good discounts as well...

Link: Bestcoverey

Link: Buzzle

Knowledge is a good thing - :-)

BTW - Calif is trying to pass a new advertising campaign that will propose oil changes out beyond the "conventional wisdom of thought" of 3,000 miles. The stated purpose is to save millions of gallons of oil being used and refined....

MODERATOR NOTE: Link to other Amsoil dealer was removed.

Members, as a reminder, our sponsors spend a fair amount of time and money to be here, and we appreciate if you show them support. Specifically, the discussion of multiple oil brands, weights, etc and comparisons are just fine. Even links to these comparisons are fine. However, a link to another Amsoil supplier is not necessary. We already have the best one (thanks, Mike)! If you have any questions or concerns, please let the moderators know. Thanks!

In all honesty, I buy Amsoil because it is the best. I am happy to support our sponsors, but I do significant research on most of the parts and supplies I buy. I am very picky about quality. I researched the heck out of Amsoil before I switched my cars over. If you've seen my posts, I've also done one sampling of my used oil. Amsoil holds up great, and does everything it's advertised to do. I'm a believer due to it's performance, not because of it's advertising.

I am sure other oils are very good too. I want the BEST. My wife tells me that if I spent 1/2 as much time being concerned about what I put in my body as I do about what goes into my truck, I'd probably live forever. She has a point!

Anyway, I like to see the comparison tests. The technology is always changing. Oil is one of the most heavily tested fluids on the planet. It's ability to protect moving metal parts is pretty amazing when you think about it. So keep posting the info. Good stuff!

Re: RE: Synthetic Oils

Postby BuxCamper » Jan 15 2012, 5:49pm

What has finally convinced me about synthetics was a rather unscientific cold flow test. I picked up a generator last spring and this past fall it got me through Hurricane Irene. In November I decided to change out the oil with Amsoil small engine synthetic. It was about 45 F. My son helped me put it up on blocks so I could get a drain pan under it, I removed the drain plug and glub... glub... glub.... It flowed like molasses. He took off the gas cap thinking it would break the vacuum (bless his heart he was thinking!) but I already had the oil fill cap open. I ended up giving it 30 minutes to drain. The Amsoil flowed smoothly out of the bottle at the same temperature. I can only imagine what that dino oil would have been like had it been freezing or below.

Right now the Silverado is running Mobil 1 and the Envoy has Amsoil.

Sorry Mike aka Z15,

I did not realize that the performance oil link was another Amsoil dealer... I tried hard NOT to do that... I'll be more careful next time..

It's hard finding links to motor oil tests that are NOT sponsored by manufacturers or dealers... I'm constantly on the look out for "Independent Studies"...

My apologies, :-)

if I decided to run synthetic oil in my sierra would I have any issues in the future if there were any warrantee related items in the engine?? I know if you do your own oil you are supposed to keep records of when & a reciept of the purchase of the oil & filter but was not sure what a dealer would say if service was needed..

Just keep receipts and a log of your mileage. You will be just fine.
My dealer thinks I am a know it all...but I really don't care.
