Rough idle while in gear...

Truck idles rough and dies while in gear

Rough idle while in gear...

Postby baminter [OP] » Jun 22 2011, 7:30pm

I have an 1994 GMC Sierra 5.7L 4X4. The problem I'm having is that once I put my truck in drive or reverse it boggs the motor down and dies.. When I take off from a stop light it runs rough, but once I get going it seems to run fine. I did a self scan of the emc and got code 32 from it so I replaced the EGR and it didn't fix the problem. It actually seems to be getting worse. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

if you havent already, check the simple things, i would make sure plugs and wires are all good, make sure plugs are all in good shape and gapped to .035, if those all check out, i would look into your timing. i had an 88 with the 5.7 efi in it and i had the same problem, i ended up having to advance the timing on it, which i did just by turning the distributor cap a little bit and listening to how the truck sounds and drives by ear, it was an easy 5 second solution.

I should've put more info in my question first... The plugs, wires, coil, distributor cap and rotor are all three months old and I have also sprayed carb cleaner around all my vaccum connections with no change. I have also replaced the fuel filter.

I know my brother had a problem similar to yours it ended up being the fuel pump. Don't know if this will work for you but sounds just like the same problem he had and it worked for him.
I WOULD RATHER HAVE IT AND NOT NEED IT.. THEN NEED IT AND NOT HAVE IT !

Hey, seen this problem a lot at a GM dealership i worked at. I think you've got a bad EGR passage. Unfortunately, you generally have to remove the intake manifold and use a screwdriver and b12 chemtool to loosen up all of the deposits in the EGR system passageways. I've seen the ports get really clogged up and if you don't clean it out right it won't matter how many new parts you put on it because without the right airflow in the intake, the parts can't work.

And remember, EGR=exhaust gas recirculation, the system is just trying to send some of the exhaust gases back into the engine and it can't recirculate well without clean airways.

Hope I was able to help, good luck, and remember to take special notice to how the distributor comes out, make a lot of scribes/pics.

so you just pour this B-12 Chemtool® Air Intake Cleaner in the tank or remove the intake manifold?
which product to pour in the tank to clean the air intake?

You would have to actually dig at it with a pick or screwdriver while spraying the cleaner in the passage. You dig a little, then spray a little until it is cleared.

i just replaced this today
http://www.napacanada.com/en/PartsAcces ... umber.aspx
PART NUMBER 481830

i wonder if i should replace the cap and rotor too, any ideas why this is still happening, i know these injectors are very knew. it could be the intake manifold being clogged up. i just replaced the wire set too and it sounds very good on idle now. last oil change was about 4,000 kms now.
