Saturday Morning K&N Install...

Postby Dukec4s [OP] » Jul 31 2011, 12:37am

Picked up the K&N Series 63 Aircharger Intake kit last night.

Here are a few pictures of the install. Fired up the 5.3 Vortec and was really suprised at the throttle response. The sound ain't bad either!

Next mod, a Magnaflow muffler. I considered a cat-back system but really don't see the benefit.....mandrel-bent pipes are overkill for my truck imo....the stock exhaust pipes at 2.75" flows well........besides I really like the angle-cut raw look of the stock tailpipe...and not a big fan of chrome tips....

Used some Autosol to sheen up the stock pipe....

Looks nice ! You really notice the difference in the throttle response? That is one thing i would like to get out of my truck. Better throttle response. Now when i floor it it's like it has to think about it before it kicks in an goes. I will say when it hits you do feel the 397 hp! But would like to feel it sooner !
Thanks for the pics and post.
I WOULD RATHER HAVE IT AND NOT NEED IT.. THEN NEED IT AND NOT HAVE IT !

I think you're feeling turbo lag, Mark! Oh well, that's the price you have to pay for 397 HP and 765 TQ.

But on to the K&N install- that looks really nice! Very sharp, very clean.

I'm running the exact set up your looking for, I have the Aircharger and a 18x4x9" Magnaflow with a custom tailpipe off the muffler (Blastin Bob's, everything for under 210 bucks). I love it so far, I think the only thing I would change is to a 14" Magnaflow which I might do anyway, there is plenty of pipe slid into both ends of the muffler.

Rdss,

Do you have pics of the Magnaflow? I'd love to see it!
How's the sound? I'm looking for a moderate note.
Which model # Magnaflow do you have?

Thanks!

You have to remember that the new trucks have throttle by wire so there will always be a little lag.

I do know with my tuner drop in filter MIT and Flow Master muffler it does help. Worth all the coin for the results I am getting with the little fuel increase is up in the air, the way the truck sounds and feels with the peddle on the floor is more than worth it. :)

I've got a K&N on order, glad to hear about the throttle response. I do not know if it would work on a GM vehicle, but on my wife's Dodge Avenger the drive by wire can be "adjusted" by turning the key on(do not start engine) wait until all start up lights go out, press throttle to floor slowly (15 seconds), release throttle slowly (taking about 15 seconds) turn key to off. Then start car. made a noticable difference in throttle response. No BS....it is on several forums. I have not tried this yet on the pickup, but may tomorrow. Hope it helps, but, not holding my breath. Probably built into their programming.

Duke, here's my topic with pics. I will look up the exact part number later. Just remember, my tailpipe is aftermarket, you will have to check out you inlet/outlet locations for you replacement muffler. The 18" muffler sounds great, it is moderately louder than stock and I went this way for my 3 1/2 year old boy which lives the sound of out almost as much as my HD Nightster V&H Short Shots. I think the 14" will be a great option as well if you dobt mind a little more noise.
